Vice- principal appointed The Durham Board of Educa- tion has announced that Helene Daleman will be the vice principal at the elemen school now un- der construction in Port Perry. Ms. Daleman has been work- ing as a consultant with the Board. The principal of the new school (still without a name) on Simcoe Strcet will be Harry Kiezebrink, former principal at RH Cornish in Port Perry. The new school is scheduled to open its doors for students this September. Meanwhile, the Durham Board has also announced that RH Cor- nish vice principal has been ap- pointed principal at Beaverton Public School, effective this Sep- tember. And Jack Smyka, who worked as vice principal at Prince Albert PS will take up new duties in September as principal of Glen- grove PS. Taking over the principal's du- ties at Cornish in September will be Stan Todd from Southwood Park PS. The appointments were an- nounced following the Board's meeting on February 27. Police bears Thanks to a generous pledge of $35,000 by the Telephone Pioneers Of America, Chapter 91, the Good Bears Of The World organization will be placing a teddy bear in every OPP cruiser in the province by Canada Day, July 1, 1989. Initially a pilot project limited to OPP's No. 6 District which en- compasses the counties of Grey, Bruce, Wellington, Perth, Huron, and the Region of Waterloo, the support of the Telephone Pioneers of America will allow all 1,000 cruisers that operate daily in On- tario to be equipped with a 12 inch tall, stuffed teddy bear. "We are delighted to see a ted- dy bear onboard all of our cruisers," said OPP S/Sgt. Irena Lawrenson. 'Children who are the victims of traffic accidents, family violence or other traumatic situations are often distraught and would welcome the comfort of a teddy bear. Other police forces have successfully used teddy bears to forge a bond between the child and the officer." Weather The weekend's lousy weather cost motorists plenty as Durham Region's roads turned into skating rinks. Durham Regional Police are blaming freezing rain for the 30 or more minor accidents which oc- curred in 26 Division (including Port Perry and Uxbridge) over the weekend. On Saturday night Durham po- lice had their hands full with a rollover on the Shirley Rd., while OPP officers responded at the same time to an accident at the corner of Highway 12 and Region- al Rd. 8. In a separate accident, four peo- le from the Stouffville area were njured in an accident near Ux- bridge, including one Jovnpuer who was taken to Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto with serious injuries. Fortunately there were no major injuries in Scugog Township. carpet tiles *5.99.. a Ask our helpful sales staff about these revolutionary new carpet tiles.
