Harry Poulton named Horseman of the Year __Utica's wonderhorse, Matts . Scooter, has been named Horse of thé Year by the Canadian Standar- bred Association and the Hamess Reporters of Canada. Harry Poulton, trainer of Matt, On The Road Again and Stargaze * Hanover, was named Horseman of the Year. : Stargaze Hanover was named Aged Pacing Horse of the Year. e awards were presented Sat- urday February 25 at the Marriott Hotel in Rexdale; : Matts Scooter, also named Three Year Old Pacing Colt of the Year, is owned by Gord and Illa Rumpel of Utica aid Charles Jura- vinski, owner of Flamborough Downs. Matt made harness racing histo- ry last fall in Lexington when he paced the track with the fastest time in harness racing history, 1:48.2. The fastest previous time was held by a horse called Nia- © tross--1:49.1, a time that went un- beaten for eight years. Last year Matt $1,783,558 from 22 starts, racing across Canada and the U.S., win- ning just about everywhere he ap- peared. His name will grace the , record books as the fastest stan- Rae in history. © "In a journal published by the HRC to commemorate the awards ceremony, editor Heather McKay - 'Roberts wrote, "Most owners, 'Otraifiierd: dnd drivers' dredin of that one Horse of the Ycar, but the 1988 trophy will be the third for "'the' Rumpels and Hatry Poulton, ~ whose On The Road Again cap- tured that coveted prize in both 1984 8) anh . Harry Poulton, who is responsi- ble for much of Matt's success, trains at OTRA (On The Road Again) Farm just west of Utica. A native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, he left the earned. province for Calgary at 18, where - e workéd for several horscmen before branching out with his own stable. A mutual friend introduced him to Gord Rumpel in 1981 and a successful partnership was creat- ed. 5 In 1982 Gord and Harry pur- chased three horses at the January . sale at 0p Meadowlands: includ- ing a yearling colt which they bought for $10,000. The colt was On The Road Again, the second highest money winner in harness racing history, with a career total of $2.8 million. Poulton had another taste of success with Stargaze Hanover, but it was Matts Scooter that real- ly made the racing world sit up and take notice. Editor Roberts described Matt as a true test of Poulton's patience and ability as a trainer. He told her, "He was very agres- sive on the track and just misera- ble to break. He would try to kick you out of the jogger...he was so tough. Everything was a struggle. I can remember saying to one of the guys that Matt would either be a great horse or no stock at all be- cause he would have killed him- self otherwise." The horse was to be sold to a - New Jersey stable for $4.2 mil- lion last November, providing Matt passed a fertility test in Guelph. ~ "He didn't pass." The money slipped through the owners' fin- gers, and Matt will return to the racetrack in 1989. The third big winner with roots in Scugog was Stargaze Hanover, Aged Pacing Horse of the Year. Owned by Harry Poulton and his wife Cheryl, and Gord and Illa Rumpel, Stargaze banked $325,237 last year. Much of the horse's success is again being credited to Poulton. RONALD D. BRIDGEWATER, Ba.
