28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 14, 1989 Young curlers in Provincials After having a dynamite time in Parry Sound at the Provincial Rampionships, oung curlers at R.H. Comish Public School want to host a similar tournament in Scugog next year or the year after. On F 25 and 26, teachers Reg Philip, Bill Littlefair, and curling enthusiast Jan Towns, took an excited group of Comish students to Sound to com- pete in the first-ever Ontario tour- nament for public school curlers, A teacher at William Beat Public School in Parry Sound, Ray Pavlove, had talked with Mr. Philip about the possibility of a Provincial Championship for a long time, and finally went ahead with it this year. : "It was a tremendous communi- ly effort," Mr. Philip said about € competition. "It was so super- bly run." Twenty-four rinks were layed with teams from Parry Sound, Cornish, Sudbury, North Bay, MacTier and Holland Landing par- ticipating. Holland Landing won the championship, but Cornish managed to make it to the finals of the third event. But the competition itself was only part of the fun. Meeting other children from all over the province was a kick in it- self, and many. local students have already written letters to new Every student at the competition received a sweatshirt, a goodie Odd Fellows & Rebekahs TRIP of the MONTH WINNERS FIRST 6 DRAWS for 1988-89 bag, and on Saturday night a dance was held featuring all the pizza and hop the kids could stomach. "They're still talking about it," Mr. Philip said with a grin, More than 100 students curled, but the stands were packed all weekend long. The event was even covered by electronic media, in- cluding T.S.N. and CTV. Because the event was such a success, other schools arc already talking about hosting another championship tournament next year. Although Mr. Philip isn't sure if such a thing could be ar- ranged in Scugog next year, he would like to host it sometime in the near future. "I think it would be great for the community," he said. Curling was introduced to Cor- nish in 1971 when Mr. Philip started teaching there. He's a self- confessed curling fan, and he ad- mits, "What we're trying to do here is promote the sport. . I think curling is a game that 1s truly for all people. It's a game for life--it's not something you're going to quit when you turn 30. When we get students interested in the game at this age, it's the ideal age to begin." Hosting a tournament similar to Parry Sound's means a great deal of work, requiring much support from the entire community. But Mr. Philip is sure Scugog could put on a tournament that would be remembered for a long time.
