Robinglade Estates Women's DU plans to spend 3 million in Ontario Directors of Ducks Unlimited Canada, meeting in Winnipeg on March 4, approved a budget of nearly $3 million for the corpora- tion's operations in Ontario dur- ing 1989. Most of the money will be used to restore wetlands in the pro- vince to provide better habitat for nesting and brood rearing water- fowl. Plans call for new develop- ment work on 35 marshes across the province. An estimated 1,100 hectares of habitat will be im- proved or restored with installa- tion of water control and contain- ment works. New initiatives to in- crease production.on beaver ponds and large riverine systems are being implemented. While these programs are in their infan- cy, the potential is great. While some of the Ontario pro- ject sites border the Great Lakes, the main thrust of the provincial program of the privately-funded conservation group will focus on moderately sized and small wetlands inland from the Lakes. These wetlands are particularly attractive to nesting ducks and of- fer excellent potential to boost continental duck production. In 1988, Ducks Unlimited staff in Ontario supervised work on 42 separate projects involving 62 wetland basins. Almost 1,300 hec- tares of habitat were developed. According to waterfowl biologists with the corporation working out of offices in Barrie, Kingston and Timmins, prospects for ducks and geese arriving in Ontario this spring are quite mix- ed. Good spring habitat pro- spects, that is plenty of water- filled basins are unlikely in much of the south. In the north, condi- tions are much more inviting. The Canadian operation works cooperatively with governments of all provinces and territories and with other non-government conservation groups to restore and preserve wetlands and nesting areas. For 1989, the intent of the corporation is to oversee the development across Canada of 19,800 hectares or about 49,000 acres of habitat. Over $44.6 million will be spent throughout the nation to achieve this goal. DON FORDER INSURANCE BROKERS LTD. SELWIN FINANCIAL SERVICES INC.
