32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 14, 1989 Girl Guides learn all about firefighting by Heather McCrae February was a busy month for the Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders in the Scugog area. Early in the month the Brownies of the First Port Perry pack were 'thrifty' as they made their own wrapping paper, then wrapped a gift each had brought in and delivered these gifts in Love Boxes to the nursing heme. No doubt the residents and staff were pleased to see the girls shining, "eager and happy faces as they sang songs to everyone's delight. These girls seem to be an adven- turesome lot as Tawny Owl (Maryanne Suppelsa) and Brown Owl (Deanna Harper) have been working with the girls on first aid and the use of a compass. Laura Longo has joined the First Seagrave Brownies as a Mother Helper. This active group MYERS CASH & CARRY BULK FOOD & DAIRY STORE SPECIALS - GLAZED CHERRIES Red & Green 2.29. Speaking of 'around the globe,' the Third Port Perry Brownies made Thinking Day cards and mailed them to their friends of the First Bersted Brownie pack in Bognor Regis, England. In return, much to their delight, the Port Perry girls received a friendship tree! There are over one hundred - badges a Guide has the choice to work on and earn but almost one third of these she can choose that will help her earn the All Round Cord. A guide must have earned one of these three badges, name- ly; Fire Safety, First Aid or Rescuer. The Fourth Port Perry or "Island" Guides chose to work on their Fire Safety badge. These girls visited the firehall last week and were taught by our profes- sionals about fire prevention and emergency procedures. On February 13 the First and Second Guide Companies of Port Perry had the pleasure of meeting our International Commissioner, Mrs. Jackie Neun of Port Hope, who spoke on Guiding in Zamiba, Africa. Winter vacationers return In Guiding or any organization good team-work rarely happens by accident or luck. It takes time, patience and compromise on the part of everyone involved but the results are well worth the effort. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Spring Break. Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader This is the season when winter vacationers start to consider their return trips and perhaps realize our weather has been reasonable except for ice. But in spite of this, new ex- periences and a chance to get away from monotony and the same routine give us a lift and a chance to see how other people live. Geo. and Ethel Freeman have recently returned when Geo. ex- perienced his first flight. Mrs. Hilda Michell from Stephenson's Point has just returned full of vim after travell- ing around for 2 weeks. First of all she accompanied her daughter Mrs. Bev O'Connor, and married granddaughter Mrs. Patti Johnstone on an 8 day Caribbean Cruise. The boat sailed every night and they were permitted to SEVEN MLE ISLAND RESORT ~ Conc. 11 & 7A Hwy. They were on the Bar- badoes Islands, Martinique and St. Thomas. Most of the people spoke English with the exception of Martinique where French was the main language. After returning from the Cruise Mrs. Michell visited family in Toronto and Hamilton where she enjoyed a birthday party. 'Sunday was a perfect day for the Special guests when 10 of the present 12 members of the "Golden Slipper" group appeared early and played several selec- tions for the early worshippers, as well as numbers through the ser- vice. For their special number Mrs. Edna Beckett sang with the music. It seems as if they get as much joy from renditions as the audience. Several Couples from the Island United Church gathered for bowl- ing on Sat. evening and reported a delightful evening. After lifelong experiences on the Island with farming, Peter Hood - with his wife and children will be moving to a large dairy farm near Owen Sound and Ber- nie will give up her several years of experience in the Can.
