| Help for PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 14, 1989 -- 49 Lifeguide by David Beesley Last month when a United Airlines jet's outer skin peeled away, nine people were sucked to a horrible death. The plane limped back to Hawaii - a gaping hole in its side. The incident pro- mpted aviation investigators to question whether this was yet another terrorist attack or a serious structural failure. The evidence quickly pointed to the latter. A faulty cargo door was determined to be the most likely cause of the disaster. This startling conclusion has caused many to doubt the safety of air travel, particularly if one is flying on board an older aircraft. There are emerging serious questions as to the reliability of what were once thought as perfectly safe airplanes, As I thought about the failure of Flight 811, I thought about the structural defects that are beginning to show in many of the time-honoured institutions of our society. Like sleek jumbo jets these reliable institutions once appeared to be utterly reliable in getting us to our destination. I'm thinking of institutions like order- Y government organized religion and the traditional family unit. et as we analyse the shape of these institutions we see the tell- tale signs of stress. There are cracks in the fuselage, metal fatigue is evident, and the powerful engines seem to be spewing the black smoke that signals serious trouble ahead. Over the course of the next series of Lifeguide articles, I want to look at the prospects of survival for these great institutions. I care about them. I'm a passenger on board them and so are you. It makes a difference whether they continue to fly or come crashing down. Our own country's survival depends on them. When the mayday distress call is heard from our elected of- ficials, we'd better listen. When effective government stops - we op. : When we watch the established church slip into serious decline - we'd better worry. The moral fuel provided by religious training helps keep our culture aloft. When we see the families of our nation battered in the tur- bulance of modern problems and pressures - we'd better do something. Now I must warn you I'm a Christian. So I write from what could be considered a conservative, traditional position. In other words, I think that we should stick with the institutions that have gotten us along so far. I'm not like those who advocate a radical departure from the past. They suggest we (to change metaphors) switch horses mid-stream. Quite frankly, I think they're all wet! My position is, and as will be reflected in future columns, a return to basic historic values. I believe the way ahead is best seen by looking back over our shoulder. Despite what is said, I'm convinced that these wounded institutional airships can deliver us to our com- mon destination. Let me suggest 3 easy steps to follow as we attempt to navigate ~ the course ahead. Let's try to remember what government is meant to be and how we can all contribute to repairing this injured institution. Let's try to recover our sense of faith in the message of the traditional church. Despite its obvious faults, let's not throw out the maps it possesses to guide us in the right direction. Finally, let's try to restore to our homes the love, caring and commitment that made for an enjoyable trip as together we journey through time and space. When we meet next, I'll speak about the crisis in confidence facing governments. Until then, Bon Voyage! (Rev. David Beesley is pastor at Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, Port Perry). nicotine addicts Durham Region Lung Associa- tion will run its popular smoking cessation program, "Countdown" in Port Perry starting on April 10, 1989.
