While some mothers and daughters don't get along doing the dishes, Sandra Kissock and her daughter Kendra Boyd are actually in business together. And they claim they don't fight. As the new co-owners of Myers Cash and Carry (on Highway 7A in Port Perry, next ntucky Fried Chicken) the mom and daughter team has to get along--and they do. Admira- "It's terrific," Kendra says en- thusiastically. Her mom agrees. "It's work- ing really well. We're finding one's strength is another's weakness and vice versa." Kendra adds, "With Mom and I, there's no power trips." What's surprising is that the pair never really planned on go- ing into business until Sandra found herself "faced with unex- pected unemployment after working for a social service agency for 10 years." Kendra had also worked for an agency for a decade, and was looking for a new challenge. "We'd been bulk food shop- pers for years," Sandra says, so when they heard that the Myers bulk food and dairy store was PORT PERRY PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 11, 1969 -- 135 Mom and daughter team actually works together! up for sale, it seemed a natural opportunity. So after two short months of planning and negotiating, the two Seagrave residents took over on March 15, with some "help from their husbands Ken Kissock and Steve Boyd. Between the four family members, learning the ropes hasbeen abreeze. "Rather than everyone trying to learn everything i in the first week, we share," Sandra says. Not that running the store it- self has been completely easy. Keeping a food store clean is a jobinitself. "There's no room for error in this business,"Sandra explains. "Your store has to be spotless. Your stock has to be fresh and you have to be friendly with cus- tomers." New ideas include introduc- ing a line of flavoured teas, a se- lection of nuts, and a variety of new and different products. Sandra and Kendra are also going to be giving out recipes to go with bulk food items, to help shoppersin the kitchen. "To buy bulk, you have to know how to cook bulk," Sandra points out. "One of our objec- tives is, in this day of rising costs, to encourage and educat- ed people in bulk food buying because it is going to save them money." They're also offering senior citizens 10% discounts on all regularly priced bulk food items on Mondays and Tuesdays. With all their ideas and en- thusiasm, this mother and daughter team is enjoying the jobofrunning abusiness. But do they get along doing the dishes?
