The Go-Devil wasn't made for Lake Scuogog, but two busi- nessmen believe this unique outboard motor was made for the weedy lake. Paul Phillips and Gord Pogue are plenty excited about the Go- Devil. So excited, they've be- come the Louisiana made mo- tor's first dealers in Canada and have obtained distributor rights for all of Canada. Just what, exactly, is a Go- Devil? Frankly, it's the funniest looking outboard motor ever seen in these parts, or else- where. It mounts on the back of any small boat, its Briggs & Stratton engine looking a little like a lawnmower motor, with a long, long tail protruding from the back. But looks aside, the Go-Devil is enthusiastically proclaimed by its manufacturers as the "most efficient, inexpensive, shallow water propulsion de- vice ever invented!" The engine is air-cooled (un- like conventional motors which are water cooled) and with the shaft lubricated with grease, the Go-Devil can run out of the water indefinitely. Some units have been used in sludge pits in paper mills where a convention- al outboard with a water pump cannot run at all. The Go-Devil usually only requires enough water to float the boat. Best of all, the propeller is vir- tually weedless, which is why Paul and Gord think the Go- Devil is perfect for Lake Scugog. The partners have known each other for a few years. Developed and patented in 1977, the original Go-Devil has been widely accepted in Loui- siana and Southeast Texas as one of the most popular duck hunting motors. The units are available in 3, 5, 8, 11, and 18 horsepower models. Paul and Gord claim the price tags are comparable with conventional motors. . Paul explained, "These out- boards aren't meant to replace the conventional outboard--but theyll do things those motors won't even think of doing." Gord added, "They're strictly a workhorse."
