24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 18, 1989 First time blood donor by Cathy Olliffe I'd always been scared of giv- ingblood. Actually, I was just plain scared of needles, so you wouldn't catch me lying on a stretcher, a hunk of steel stick- ing out of my arm, with all kinds of red stuffleaking out. That's the way I used to think, and I guess I had a good reason. When I was just a little kid some nurse in Midland tried to jam a rusty needle in my arm while I howled a lot. The memo- ry lasted alot of years. But that all changed a week or so ago when I talked to Paul Saulnier, who was about to give blood for the 76th time. I figured, hey, if this guy can doit 75 times, Ican atleast try it once. So I hiked on up to the Im- maculate Concepticn Catholic Hall last Friday April 14 to give itashot (shot, getit?). The clinic was hosted once again by the Kinettes and Kins- men Club of Port Perry, and everyone involved made sure my visit (and everyone else's) was special. Because I was new, I was giv- en a special sticker proclaiming my "first time" and even a pin resembling a droplet of blood. But gifts or no gifts, I was still plenty nervous when I went up to the nurse who swabbed my finger and promptly pricked it before I knew what was happen- ing. "Ouch," I said halfheartedly. It honestly didn't hurt--I'm just not one to waste a perfectly good "ouch" when given the opportu- nity. The nurse checked my blood for iron and other stuff, and when I was proclaimed okay (I was terribly frightened they might say I had typhoid or something), I wandered over to the lawn chair-like stretchers to meet another nurse. She asked me to lie down (wow, those things are comfort- able--I almost stole one for my backyard), we exchanged a few pleasantries (I do that when I'm scared out of my trees), I rolled confesses, 'It was easy!' I giggled, ridiculously proud. And then, before I could even get an ouch out, the dreaded needle was injected. And you know? I honestly, truely, cross- my-heart, did not feel a thing. _ I had to look, just to make sure the needle was there. Relieved, I laid back for five or ten minutes and chatted and daydreamed and just generally enjoyed the bliss of lying on my back during a time I should have been back at the office, working. When my quota of blood was taken, I was treated to juice and cookies, and to the feeling of I didit. I finally did it. 1t felt so darn good I wanted todoit again. I'll get my chance when the Kinettes and the Kinsmen host another clinic this Fall, prob- ably September, according to Kinettes president Karen Tay- lor. Karen, by the way, was thrilled about the results of the clinic. Last time they collected 160 units. This year the grand total was 173. "And we had a lot of first time donors," she said. Maybe Paul Saulnier affected other people the way he did me. And who knows, maybe some day I'll count my 75th donation. By the way, the clinic was also a success for Port Perry's Community Memorial Hospital building fund campaign. For every unit of blood donat- ed, the Kinettes and Kinsmen donated $1 to the hospital. Kar- en Taylor said the group would be rounding off the figure to 200. 7. 7] y 7) 22 y y 2, Ld / > 7 7 > N Fd hdl hdl Bl Bd Bd BAER Ted dl Ted dl Fd 2 /) bd Id bY SSNASNSNNS LI SAIS N a) a) / Ld / [4 pI SN Al Al al al a8 2 SAN MAS A AN 48 A AB AA a8 AQ A828 AN AS AS a bal a AS AS AS A Al aN Al A SNS LCS Ud PA 4 td 7 Z| 4 7, 7 Ld PAC LA TA YA YA TA WA WR WA A TA WA WA TA WR WA TA WA TA WA WA TA TA TA TA TA TA Y Pelican, Pier's ... | 'SPRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER' SALE Everything in the store on sale at .................
