"It was the feeling of the majority of the committee mem- bers that the public have been very generous in contributing to the fund raisng campaign," said councillor Christie. She suggested the public fund-raising campaign could be extended. Councillor Don Cochrane said he agrees that the $150,000 grant from the Town- ships "quite generous." Mayor Hall, who is a mem- ber of the Hospital Board and closely associated with the fund-raising campaign, said he was reluctant to talk about this issue. But he noted that the pro- ject will cost slightly more than $8 million and the provincial share of the building cost is two- thirds. That leaves one-third of the total cost to be raised locally. Ward 1 councillor Neil Hunter commented that there is always the possibility that council can change the contri- bution in next year's budget. The Township budget ap- proved Monday morning calls for spending in 1989 of $6,656,872. Last year's budget was just slightly over $6.1 mil- lion. Ratepayers in Scugog won't know for several weeks what the total tax hike will be for this year as Durham Region and the Boards of Education have not yet set their new budgets. Here are a few of the bud- get highlights for 1989 in Scu- gog Township. Fire protection (Hall 1, Port Perry) will cost $283,000 this year, down from $326,000 last year, when the Township paid for a new emergency van. Fire protection (Hall 2, Caesarea) will cost-$198,264, up from $174,000 last year. Purchase of a new tanker for Caesarea hall will be de- layed until 1990, though $44,000 towards the cost was placed in reserve this year. Transportation services (roads, sidewalks, snow remov- al and so on) will cost Scugog $2.78 million this year, up from $2.5 million last year. This figure includes $36,000 for work to improve parking areas in the downtown core at the library, the old arena pad and land behind Brocks Store on Queen Street. In the Parks department, there will be increases for staff wages and benefits, , new equip- ment including playground equipment, and $30,000 for a feasibility study on the Town- ship owned recreation lands around the Scugog Arena.
