Approve $3,000. council pay hike Durham Region councillors will be getting a $3000 pay Rob Streich ing was held in Uxbridge last Thurday evening to provide lo- .A public information meet- - Regional councillors, who currently earn $18,023 annu- ally, endorsed a new pay package at their meeting April 19. The package calls for an increase of $1,000 this year, - retroactive to Jan. 1, a similar $1,000 hike next year and a final $1,000in 1991. This means that by the time the term for the present - council expires in late 1991, councillors will be earning $21,000 per year. The motion on the pay hikes was carried virtually with- out dissent at the meeting last week. _The same motion also gives hikes in pay to committee chairmen and vice chairmen. They will pick up an addition- al $3,000 ye&rly by 1991. And the Regional chairman job, which currently has an annual salary of $63,485 (plus a car) will jump to $68,000 retroactive to Jan. 1, and increase to $71,600 next year and to $75,000in 1991. The money to paid to reps on Regional council does not include the remuneration they receive as councillors in cal residents with the opportu- nity to ask questions about the Durham Region Waste Manag- ementMaster Plan. Approximately thirty peo- ple came out to Uxbridge High School to find out about the Re- gions proposal. Consultants representing organizations preparing the plan as well as experts on recy- cling and household hazardous wastes, were on hand to explain details to people and how they could participate in the deci- sion making process.
