Chamber asks for upgrade of Park to Provincial status The Scugog Chamber of Commerce has suggested to the Provincial government that Crown Lands on the north tip of Scugog Island be up-graded for provincial park status, which would include overnight camp- ing. The Chamber made the re- quest earlier this monthin alet- ter to the Ministry of Natural Resources which is currently in the process of coming up with a long term use strategy for the approx. 420 acres of land. Chamber president Fred Churchill told the Star last week the decision to ask for park status was taken after a "lot of thoughtand discussion" on the part of the directors of the organization. He said the Chamber feels that turning part of the land into a park for overnight camp- ing and other recreation oppor- tunities would have a positive economic impact on the Town- ship and would generate em- ployment, especially for teen- agers 'during the summer months. The Province abandoned thatideain the early 1970's and the 420 acres has remained in a relatively un-touched state ever since with only a single access trail from the Island Road # 7. Late last fall, the Ministry of Natural Resources office in Lindsay, which manages the land, asked for comments from various groups, agencies and lo- cal councils on possible long term uses for the land. The Chamber's suggestion for using part of the land for a provincial campground re- ceived support from Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz. On April 26, Mr. Cureatz wrote a letter to Natural Re- sources Minister Vince Kerrio asking "when the (Scugog) Chamber can anticipate the up- grading to provincial park stat- us since that was the original status." Mr. Cureatz' letter goes on to say "I agree such a move would be in the right direction and would benefit the commu- nity. Please give serious consid- eration to this request." Earlier this winter, both Scugog Township and Durham Region council endorsed resolu- tions asking that the lands be up-graded for better public rec- reation opportunities. But the resolutions did not ask for full provincial park status. The Ministry of Natural Resources is expected to make its recommendations known some time early this summer. wy.
