Along with chocolate milk and carrot sticks were toys, all lovingly packed into the gaily wrapped boxes. At first glance, the scene in teacher Ed Maring's classroom resembled a party--and in a \ first "published" books. sense, it was. But there was also alot ofhard work going on Tues- day April 25. Tuesday was the day the two classes, older and younger, ur- ban and country, got together for the first time after nearly a whole school year of writing let- ters back and forth. The were together in order to produce childrens' books. The older children, from Whitby, did the actual writing. The younger Cartwright crew were called upon to provide illustrations. The idea was the brainchild of teachers Ed Maring of Cart- wright and his wife Penny, who teaches the Grade 8 class in Whitby. They thought it might be a great idea to twin the two class- es in a cause--producing the books. The Grade 8's kept busy writing children's stories, and the project culminated with the two classes getting togetherlast Tuesday at Cartwright, during Education Week. All morning long, the stu- dents worked earnestly at writ- ing and illustrating, the young- er children paired with the older students. At lunch time, the kids shared the crafty box lunches. The finished products, the books, were exceptionally well done, and will be presented to the Durham Board of Education forinspection. But the real thrill was seeing how well the students got along. "There isn't anybody who feels out of place," Penny Mar- ing said, observing the heads bent together, working fever- ishly. "I can't believe how they get along." "Not one kid was absent to- day," her husband added. -After lunch, the Grade 8's were bussed back to Whitby, but the story doesn't end there. / pe od J > pr 2 # i. i, wank Pa Although the students from Whitby and Cartwright had never met before, they all got along well, including these two girls who might have been sisters. Sometime soon, the Grade 2's will hop on a bus and pay their newfound friends a visit. No doubt they, too, will arrive bear- inggifts.
