EE om el WR wee ST re Be EI -------------------------------- a -- Fastball fans in Port Perry will notice a few changes when the XL Eagles take to the field for the first time this season. us Right off the bat, the team will be decked out in newly styled uniforms, though the tra- ditional blue, red and white XL colours will be retained. And manager Doug Scott has injected what he calls "some new blood" into his line-up for the coming season. In an interview with the Star recently, Scott said it's time for some younger players to break into the tough ity and District A Division League with the Eagles, and he's got six tal- ented players in the line-up with a'solid contingent of vete- rans who have been with the club for several years. Dave Culbert, Dave Bur- nett, Steve Connors and Steve Durham are all well known in this community as they played their minor fastball here. They'll be joined by broth- ers Rich and Jeff Bricknell, both of whom have plenty of competi- - tive fastball experience under their belts. Familiar names from previ- ous Eagles squads will include Jay Williams, Doug Christie, Larry Pilkey, Colin Wackett, Ken Bryant, Dave Dickson and Rick Blohm. And the all-important pitching duties will be handled this season by right-handers Al " Heintzman and Lawrie Wil- liams, with Ken Irvine throw- ing from the south side. The team has been working out for the past two weeks and will have at least two exhibition games at the Water Street dia- monds, one on May 7 at 7:00 PM and the other at 8:30 PM, May11. The season home opener for the Eagles will be on the tra- ditional Thursday evening, May 11, it ee time at the usual 8:30 . The opponents for the opener are not known at this time. Scott predicts the League this year will be tougher and more competitive than ever. There are just four teams- Port Perry, Greenbank Gam- blers, Stouffville and the Oshawa Merchants, who will play a 12 game schedule. But the four teams will also play ten games (home and home) with the five teams from very competitive Richmond Hill Mens League. "We are going to see some quality pitching from the Rich- mond hn teams," said Scott, adding that the ten games will count in the standings for the City and District Loop. The schedule this year will be shortened with league play wrapping up August 26 in Stouffville when the four teams will play a double knock-out tournament to determine the league winner. Then the teams will be able to concentrate on OASA playdowns. Scott says the four teams in the league, plus the five Rich- mond Hill league teams will make for some very exciting fastball for fans in this area. Scott, who hasbeen manag- ing the Mens fastball squad in Port Perry for many years, said he's really looking forward to the start of the season. But he admitted that for a time this winter, he wasn't sure if he would have the time to de- vote to managing the team.
