Raising money for research PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 9, 1989 -- 23 Carnation Day is this Saturday May 13th (From page 22 group in Crhae 22) lly en- joyed it. Gradually she asked erself, "Why can't we get a sup- port group here?" With the help of friend Karen Ruppel, who also suffers from M.S., Bonnie started a support group in this area, that takes . turns meeting in Scugog and in Uxbridge. New people and their spouses are always welcome to joinin. Terry has also involved him- self with the M.S. Society, and he's in charge of the Carnation Campaign in Scugog to raise money for M.S. research and treatment. Coin boxes are being dis- played in stores all over Port Perry, but the big day is this Saturday May 13, Carnation Day, when five stations selling carnations (both fresh and silk) will be set up at Dowson's Valu- mart, the IGA, the post office, and the liquor and beer stores. Last year the campaign raised approximately $3,000 and the Halwards are anxious to top that figure this year. No one knows how to cure M.S. or what causesit. Some researchers think M.S. may be caused by a virus and are looking for the viral "trig- ger." Others believe the disease may occur because of a defect in the body'simmune system caus- ing the body to become allergic to and destroy its own myelin. Much research is taking place to find out if myelin in people with M.S. is different from that 985-9490 Since 1956 BARN PAINTING & REPAIRS Guaranteed Workmanship For a free estimate call M. And while Bonnie Halward doesn't know what lies ahead of her--remission, or life in a wheelchair, she likes to look at the bright side of things.
