REITER, WOR SAL 3 "Bae wp EIR NE The Durham Board of Edu- cation approved its 1989 operat- ing budget Monday evening, a budget that will increase school taxes in Scugog by about 16 per cent this year. The Board's " bud- get of $266.7 million was ap- proved without any cuts Mon- day evening by a margin of 16-2. Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew in her first term on the Board, told the Star by phone late Monday night, that she doesn't like to. see such hefty tax increases, but "we feel it is a budget we can live with." She noted that with recent contract settlements, the Board was "locked into" budget hikes of about nine per cent. As for the rest, Mrs. Drew said "there is not alotoffatin this." The finance committee, she said trimmed as much as possi- ble without cutting quality, and the Board also di not want to cut back on building mainte- nance as that's just putting off what will have to be done any- way. Overall spending is up 13.5 per cent this year. For Scugog ratepayers with an average house assessed at $3500, the ed- ucation portion of the tax bill will be about $956 this year, up 16 per cent over last year. Mrs. Drew said the budget does include money this year for expanding: the parking at PPHS. Also, there will be in- creased lunch supervision for all schools, a new and needed folding door for the core room at Cornish, and provisions to pro- vide bus service for all French Immersion students who live a New plans for waterfront (From page 1) Pearce said she hopes the prior- ity items for this summer will be to remove the old playground equipment from Palmer and in- stall new equipment near the beach. She also wants to see two parking areas improved and de- veloped. One is at the existing park- ing lot by the north diamond (improve the grade) and the oth- - er is open up parking areas in Z. mle ai J CANOE the NONQUON SATURDAY, JUNE 3rd, 1989 front of the tennis courts (be- side the public washrooms) Adding more parking should be a priority this year as council also decided Monday that parallel and angle parking spaces on the east side of Water from Mary St. south will be eliminated when Water Street is re-constructed this summer. There was no estimate of what the cost might be to imple- ment the plan. Councillor Pearce said im- plementing parts of the plan is not expensive, while other as- pects of it, such as the sea-wall will be costly. Mayor Howard Hall noted that moving the baseball dia- monds hinges on development of the Arenalands. The municipality owns some 60 acres of raw land be- hind the Scugog Arena on Dur- ham Road 8. A recreation study complet- ed a couple of years ago sug- gests these lands be developed extensively for such things as baseball and soccer.
