Miss Pourie delivered a very challenging message whose sub- ject was "Women of Faith and Commitment," with St. Matthew Chapter 28, verse 10 as her text. We are celebrating the 75th An- niversary of the Women's Mis- -sionary society, Western Division during this month. The 75th An- niversary Celebration will take place in London, Ontario from May 26-28. Next Sunday, the Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated, as well as joining together with our families in honour of Mother's Day. The Ladies' Bible Class will meet on Wednesday evening of this week at 8:00 at the home of Florence Ashton. All members are urged to attend as we make further plans for the 50th Anniver- sary celebration in September. Lifeguide by Rev. David Beesley Emmanuel Pentecostal Church Several weeks ago I wrote of my concern for some of the time-honoured institutions which are threatened in our society, namely the family, the church and government. I want to speak to the crisis of confidence facing our elected representatives and how we may react in a helpful manner. Over the last few decades there has arisen a sense of public distrust in pelitics and a general distaste for those men and women who seek to pursue political careers. The recent events surrounding the Wilson Budget Leak: (or flood, as John Turner termed it) and the government's scramble to deflect criticism from its finance minister and the heated wrangling of parlia- ment in full public view does tend to sour one's feelings for this hallowed institution of democracy. At times I'm tempted to side with Milton Friedman's caustic cynicism ... "our problem can't be solved by government. Our problem is government." But before we're carried away with that unbalanced ap- proach, I want to remind us of some pretty profound words ut- tered by Jesus. He taught that "we must give to God what is com- ing to Him, and give to government what is coming to them." In other words, each has certain claims upon our individual lives. We're obliged in certain respects to God and government. Let's think for a moment of what we ought to give govern- ment in compliance with Christ's command. First - we should respect our leaders and give them honour. Now I realize it is difficult at times to excuse some of the glar- ing faults of government and politicians but I also think that we're at fault too. When we take cheap shots at those who at- tempt to do a difficult job we feed a destructive attitude that rip- ples through society and achieves no good but further depends our negativism. Second - we should realize that government has a God-ordained role. Scripture teaches that there is an authority given by God to existing political systems. Orderly government allows for our protection as citizens, our physical, emotional, spiritual well- being and the pursuit of personal fulfillment in life. C.S. Lewis expresses this nicely when he says that all a person really wants from government is the comfort and security of a warm fire to sit by and the freedom to sip tea with friends. Thirdly - we should respond in obedience. We have an ongo- ing obligation to comply with the laws of the land. The only scenario where disobedience is warranted is when human law contradicts God's law. In that case we are obligated not to obey. Finally, we should remember our government in prayer. Whether we realize it or not, the secret efficiency of prayer is enormous. As someone else has said in times past, more things are wrought in this world by prayer than were ever entertained in your mind. I think things would be a whole lot better if we did a little less complaining and a lot more praying. That last thought directs me to another institution which is facing a crisis of its own. The church exists to teach us to pray. We'll address its continuing importance to us all next time in Lifeguide. All ages would enjoy this evening out! At Rest Vera E. Lee (Cook) passed away on Monday, May 8 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry. The beloved wife of the late James A. Lee of Greenbank, she was in her 91st year. She is the dear mother of Mary June (Mrs. Glenn Smith) of Port Perry; Marina (Mrs. Robert Palmer) of Ottawa; and Helen of Kitchener. She will be lovingly remem- bered by her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Terry, Jil- lian and Leslie Howsam; Mark, Denna, Whitney, and Devon Howsam; Scott, Monica and Blake Howsam, and Robert Palmer.
