58 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 9, 1989 Homes and cooking are modest in Zambia Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader Last Wed. evening the 3 U.C.W.'s of the Scugog Pastoral Charge met at the Island United Church with approx. 50 people present to meet Mrs. Jackie Nuen of Port Hope to show pictures of Zambia, an oddly shaped country in East Central Africa where Jackie and her husband had liv- ed. The husbands certainly miss- ed a wonderful experience in com- paring the life of the people with ours. It is a poor but productive coun- try. They are very sincere in their Church 'life. They have many modest churches. Our "Head' Museum church would represent one of the best. They rush to church early Sun. morning so they can crowd into the front seats which are mainly plank and sit for 3 hours, during which time they have a prayer for Canada. A fancy blanket may serve as part of their personal attire and be used for many purposes of clothing or bedding. They cannot purchase toys so they make toys from our type of scrap. Homes and cooking materials are very modest. Of course we saw most of the negro population in the rural areas. The white people seem to have the best areas and life. After the pictures and descrip- tion the "Golden slippers' ap- peared with nearly 100 per cent of their group and dressed in their black and golden attire. For some time they gave a variety of musical selections. In scanning last weeks paper, I imagine I'm expressing apprecia- tion by many people for the col- umn about our local museum. It certainly was worth the effort. Another item that could be en- dorsed was Ann Franklin's letter "It's time we stood up for our beliefs." But then there are others too of worthy mention. It is get- ting to be a very fine paper with interests to everyone and especially good, clear pictures. A week ago, you noticed several Girl Guides received their "All Round Cord." Two of the girls, Valorie Hood and Beth Hood were from the Island. Congratulations girls. The Peter and Bernie Hood family have recently left the Island for a farm home in Chatsworth near Owen Sound, but brought the girls back for the above occasion. You will all be missed by your Island friends with whom you have spent so many years. Tyo of the Guide leaders Sue Pelyk and Roddy Barnhardt will give up their leadership this year, after 3 years, so the organization is looking for new volunteers. The Girl Guide Banquet will be held Sat. May 13 at the Island Com- munity Hall. @ Scugog Duplicate Bridge May 3/89 - 5 Table Howell Avg. 54 - Afternoon Ist - Peter Francis and Al Stevens 70%. 2nd - Doris Phinney and Otto Czilok 61. 3rd - Minnie Fisher and Ken Halliday 60. 4th - Joyce Heard and Helen Mathieson 58.
