ce dilibdl Tp ave $4 9 TH Against producer controlled marketing commission PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 16, 1989 -- 17 Beef producers voted 'NO WAY!' Seventy-two percent of pro- ducers who participated in On- tario's beef cattle marketing vote said "no" to the establishment of a producer-coritrolled marketing commission. "A significant percentage of Ontario beef cattle producers has voted to maintain all of their marketing options, including direct-to-packer sales. I now urge all the members of Ontario's beef industry to work together to achieve change and im- provements for their industry," Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food Jack Riddell said last week. Twenty-one percent of the voters voted "'yes' to the ballot's second question, which asked should a marketing commission, if formed, work towards a marketing plan with the authori- ty to manage supply and deter- mine price. The mail-in vote, which had a deadline April 14, gave Ontario's beef cattle producers an oppor- tunity to express their opinion on the future of their marketing system, as recommended by the Beef Marketing Task Force, said Riddell. Nearly 20,000 beef cattle producers cast valid ballots. "As the next step," Riddell said, "I'm going to discuss with the industry, the other recom- mendations of the Beef Marketing Task Force." Riddell noted that more than 9,000 producers attended informa- tion meetings across the pro- vince. An information package and the questions, both prepared by a committee made up of Let us make your drive worthwhile. Selection, Price and Good Old Fashioned Service is what brings people to Uxbridge. representatives from the Ontario Cattlemen's Association, Ontario Beef Producers for Change Inc. and ministry staff, were sent out to beef producers. The questions asked on the ballot were: 1. Are you in favor of the pro- posed producer-controlled marketing commission which would regulate the sale of all beef cattle in Ontario? 2. Are you in favor of the above proposed producer-controlled marketing commission working towards a national beef cattle marketing plan with the authori- ty to manage supply and deter- mine price? Beef Producers for Change advocated regulated pro- duction and marketing for cattle and asked producers to vote "Yes." OCA President, Jim Magee, made the following observation: "This vote was not just about regulating production and marketing. It was also about democratic representation and leadership. The results tell us the kind of changes cattlemen don't want. But the results do not mean that cattlemen don't want change. However, they want changes to come through the democratic structure of their own organiza- tion. Our Association has been promoting change for over 25 years - and it has always given cattlemen a chance to voice their views on marketing and other issues through our 49 county and district Cattlemen's Associations. The provincial Association has always taken its cue from what came up from the grass roots. It's interesting that the results of our DOWNTOWN. TOA Si past Annual Meeting votes on marketing agency status and supply management are very similar to the beef vote results. That tells me that OCA works. The votes at our annual meetings are true reflections of what pro- ducers across the province want." "I know from taking part in the debates that members of Beef Producers for Change have a sincere interest in the future of our industry. I want to welcome them to lend us their energies to continue to contribute to a market-oriented industry and to take an active role in our associa- tion. As I said during the beef vote meetings - we're all beef pro- ducers for change." Now Cre! | DR. Renard Seu + Stage Wet To PAomouce THE Orgone OF TheiR PRVTAL Orcice , 12 Swncoe N, Catedh.
