-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 16, 1989 Sheep farmers voted to keep sheep agency Results of the sheep referen- dum show seventy-two percent of producers who voted support the continuation of their marketing agency, Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food Jack Rid- dell announced May 11. "I am pleased that the Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency has been supported by such a high percentage of voters. I encourage the agency to continue to active- ly identify and address the needs of its producers and the Ontario sheep industry," Riddell said. As a result of the vote the agen- cy, operating under the authority of the Farm Products Marketing Act, will continue to represent On- tario's sheep, lamb and wool producers. The referendum was held in response to a request from the Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency earlier this year. The request' reflected the 1984 recommenda- tion of the Ontario Sheep Commis- sion that the agency be establish- ed without an "expression of opi- nion" from producers, but that they have the opportunity to vote on continuation of the agency after a period of operation. A total of 1,529 producers cast valid ballots in the April 14 referendum.
