As Building Fund Chairman for the Soccer Club I would like to give some background informa- tion on the Soccer Club's grant from the Township for $13,000 in 1989 towards the building of a Washroom/Club House. The total cost of our Project is $50,000. We are applying to the Ministry of Tourism and Recrea- The use of funds contribute $25,000. ($13,000 in 1989 and $12,000 in 1990). We currently have over 300 children in our Minor Soccer Pro- gram who will be using the new facility. One should note that once our new facility is built, it will belong to the Township of Scugog. Since Debbie Short thinks that funds can very easily be donated by individual citizens, we would welcome her contribution to our Building Fund. Box 1585 Port Perry tion for a grant of $16,500, the Soc- cer Club is raising $8,500, and the Township of Scugog has agreed to Editorial Comment (from page 6) English organizations in Quebec to fight assimilation there, or at least to fight for the right to put up an English sign in a variety store window. This country is $300 billion in debt because succes- sive governments up there in the la-la land that poses as our national capital have poured endless sums of money into half-baked schemes that do nothing more than keep a lot of people from getting off their duffs to find real jobs in the real world. Instead of turning off the tap and saying "NO" to outfits like the FJCF, the Government continues to dole it out and tells you to dig deeper to pay for this nonsense. We are trying to be polite in our criticism of this kind of government hand-out. We suspect there are a lot of people who might strongly suggest that if there are francophones outside Quebec who fear they are being "assimilated," the $600,000 might better be spent on train tickets back to la belle province. For the past two weeks, we have listened to Michael Wilson and his cohorts tell us why such draconian tax measures are needed in this country now. The measures hurt, and they hurt middle and low income Canadians the most. And much as the measures pinch the wallets of aver- age people, most understand that a government $300 bil- lion in debt must do something. Raising taxes is one thing. Spending those tax dollars sensibly is something else again. Projects to "fight assimi- lation" are a waste of tax money, an insult to hard-working people who have been told to tighten the belt again. Our readers have a right to freely express their opinions and view- points on just about any subject, and we feel that a lively letters col- umn helps make a better community newspaper. We insist, however, that a letter writer sign his or her name. On rare occasions, we will agree to with-hold publication of a letter writer's name, if we feel there are very good reasons to do so. : Under no circumstances will this paper print an anonymous let- ter to the editor. While we enjoy receiving letters from our readers, we must con- tinue to insist on knowing the identity of the writer. Toss THe gall MAN | SAID, TOSS THE. MICHAEL WHERE. ON BUT MoM!
