Louise Potier and Jan Grisdale become instant friends and spoke at length of starting a support group for other moms with? special needs children. % They didn't waste time. Within six weeks, notices were out. The first meeting in May 1986 was well attended. Since then the group has grown to 14 moms and meets monthly from September to June at the Potier home in Greenbank. the time is spent in sharing the joys, sorrows and frustrations of raising a child with a handicap, sharing information on resources, courses and aids, plus listening to guest speakers on such topics as 'education, taxes, siblings, toys, etc. The group is open to moms of children who have a physial, men- tal or learning disability. Louise has 3 children, Madeline 5, Robert 3, and Emily 1. Madeline has Williams Syn- drome, a disability characterized by pixie features, developmental delays, and physical difficulties such as heart and kidney pro- blems. She is in junior kindergarten at Immaculate Con- ception school, Port Perry. Jan also has 3 children, Kristy 12, Josh 8, and Beth 11%. Kristy is dyslexic - a learning disability which effects her learning in nor- mal ways despite above average intelligence. Kristy has met with great success this past year in grade 6 at Uxbridge Public school. Josh has cerebral palsy which effects all four of his limbs but this doesn't stop him from get- ting around! He uses a wheelchair and can be seen zooming aroun Usbridge Public school where he is in grade 2.
