"She couldn't back up in the culvert so she must have seen daylight and tried to get through the other side and got stuck more," Mrs. Kane said. Mrs. Kane had called the po- lice, and she claims the officer she talked to, "told us there is a big black market right now for dogs for AIDS testing. I hate like hell to think of dogs being used like that." At any rate, she believes whoever is stealing dogs must live in the area. "It's gotta be somebody around here to read the signs." Koenig is none the worse for wear from her ordeal, and the Kanes are happy she's back. They're also keeping a close eye on their dog. "She's been an excellent dog," Mrs. Kane said. When she was freed, "we all cried. Even the ly on Scugog Island, has been missing for five weeks. Mr. Kneale named two other families who lost their pets and had them returned, but they couldn't be reached in time for comment. However, both fami- lies employed the mailbox signs and both dogs were returned. He said one family paid two boys $100 for the return of their dog. Durham Regional Police Staff Sergeant Henry Raetson told the Star he has heard of dogs missing on the Island, but says rumours of dognapping and sales to animal research centres are greatly exaggerat- He said he believes the dogs in question "probably wan- dered away. People shouldn't have their dogs runing loose to begin with." He added that there's no rea- son to believe the dogs are being stolen. "At this stage there's just sus- picion, there's very little to go by. If this continues, we will start looking for common de- nominators." Marg Sanders, an Island resi- dent well known for her love of animals, is taking the story of stolen dogs seriously. She said she's never heard of so many dogs disappearing in a such a gog Island area short period of time. She's also afraid for the safety of her own dogs and even though she has a pen in her yard, she isn't taking her eyes off them. "It has got on my nerves a bit. Idon'tlet my pets out loose." Recently she went "down from one end of Pine Point to the other," speaking to dog own- ers about the disappearance of local dogs, and warning them to keep a close eye on their pets. "Mostly their reaction was to thank me. Most said they're not going to be putting their dogs out," Mrs. Sanders said. Although she believes dogs are being stolen, she doesn't be- lieve the animals are being sold for research. "I don't think that's what it's for. I think it's people who want to make a few bucks on dogs," she said. "Dogs are expensive these days." The Kneales are taking the problem very seriously and are warning all their customers. Pat Kneale also posted a sign in the store. It reads, "WARNING. Some- one is stealing dogs in the Is- land area. Please keep a close eye on your pets. If you see any- thing suspicious, please call the police."
