Mind Over Matter hits stage Looks aren't everyth Looks aren't everything, al-, though trying telling that to de- signer-clad adolescents who would sooner die than appear in public wearing bargain base- ment blue jeans. Ed Dixon, a teacher of senior students at Immaculate Con- ception Catholic School, says he notices more and more how im- portant it is for young people to look good. "They're so consumer orient- ed," he said, blaming the media in part for youngsters' preoccu- pation with material things. To combat the belief "that what you look like is more im- Roreans than what you wear", r. Dixon wrote an original mu- sical called Mind Over Matter-- a funny yet suspenseful glimpse at how one group of students discovered that looks 'aren't everything. Mind Over Matter is being performed by the Grade 7 and 8 classes in the school gymna- sium on at least three dates: Tuesday June 20 to Thursday June 22nd matinees and an eve- ning performance Thursday June 22nd. In two acts, Mind Over Mat- ter is set in a modern junior high school. The play tells the story of Andrew, a lonely boy who was transferred to a new school after being injured in an accident. He discovers his injury has given him an amazing power. His new ability proves useful to him in his dealings with the "Gucci Gang", a well-dressed band of thugs who terrorize the school, and the dreaded science teacher, Mrs. Cranium. . He befriends a girl named Shelley who is confined to a wheelchair, and together. the two must confront the vengeful gang members in a comic, yet exciting climax. The play takes a Christian approach to some of the most important issues in the lives of people today, but does it in a fashion which is lively and en- tertaining. It includes original: music (written by Mr. Dixon) as well as reworked versions of old standards such as "Why Must I Be A Teenager In Love?" (Why Must I Be A Teenager In Old Clothes?) and "Secret Agent Man" (Mrs. Cranium!) and should be particularly appeal- ing to Junior/Intermediate level students. -- ANNOUNCEMENT -- Philip and Beverley Stephenson, Keene, wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Elizabeth, to Howard Frederick, son of Frank and Verna Smith, Lindsay The wedding will take place at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lindsay, on Saturday, June 24, 1989.
