Canada Day picnic enjoyed in Ashburn Ashburn and Area News by Florence Ashton What perfect weather for the holiday week-end, and for the Canada Day Picnic held at Ashburn park. - Many people from Ashburn and - surrounding area gathered together for the pancake breakfast, and the many other fun activities of the day. The three: clowns that pranced around the grounds provided lots of laughs for everyone. Harvey and Sandy Bath and friends, as well as the brass band provided music. At 12 o'clock noon, the Canada Day cake was cut and served, and the singing of O Canada. To conclude the festivities was the balloon release around 1:30, when balloons were released into .the air, each bearing a ticket with a name and address. To me, the highlight of the day was to have the family present who found the balloon released by Sharmen Porter last year on Canada Day; they were Larry and Donna Shomper and daughter Andrea from Angolo, New York, near Buffalo. Larry and Donna had the honour of cutting our Canada Day Cake. They enjoyed the rest of the week-end with the Porter family. Special thanks and appreciation to everyone who devoted their time and talents for making this such a wonderful celebration, on this Canada's 122nd birthday. I was unable to be present at the Brooklin Horticulture Rose show last Wednesday night, but I understand they had a great show, as well as an excellent speaker in the person of John Simpkins, director of Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington. He gave a most informative and interesting talk and slide presen- tation on the many types and cultivars of peonies. Special awards went to Marilyn Love for the best red rose, Best white rose won by Margaret Beath, Best Decorative to Marilyn Love and the Best Novice Arrangement won by Margaret Beath. Con- gratulations to these two ladies. They must have worked together on this one, don't you think? The annuals show will be held on Wednesday, August 23. Special topic for that evening will be "A Diversity of Shrubs." There were 8 tables of euchre played at the Community Centre last Thursday evening. Ladies first prize to Wilma Lynde, se- cond prize to Ruby Smith, Mens' first to Joy Bright, second prize to Norman Birkett, Lone hands to Leo Richard. 50/50 draw won by Nancy Ashton. Lucky door prize winner was Harold Whitbread. Mark July 27th on your calendar for the next euchre. Special get well wishes to Roy Ingleton who has recently undergone surgery. In keeping with Canada's birth- day, Rev. McEntyre"s sermon last Sunday was titled 'Christian Patriotism." He chose as his text Psalm 67, vs. 1 and 2. Hugh Knight favoured us with a solo "Thanks to God." Next Sunday morning at 11:15 a.m,, we will welcome The Rev. John Robertson to Burns pulpit, as Mr. McEntyre will be on vaca- tion for the next two Sundays. We welcome visitors to join with us throughout the summer.
