RST * RBEN TET LRA CT PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 5, 1989 -- 3 Fomer Mayors gave over 40 years service Malcolm and Taylor honoured by community Two of Scugog Townships longest serving politicians in recent years were honoured by about 200 friends and col- leagues at a Testimonial Din- ner last Wednesday evening. Former Mayors Lawrence Malcolm and Jerry Taylor were special guests at an evening held to recognize a combined to- tal of over 40 years political ser- vice to the community. A good cross section of people from Scugog Township and Durham Region were on hand during the evening to pay trib- ute to these two men, including M.P.P.'s Sam Cureatz and Bill Ballinger: former Regional Chairman Walter Beath; May- ors Gerri Lynn O'Connor and Don Haddon of Uxbridge and Brock Twps.; Regional Chair- man Gary Herrema and many others. The tribute was chaired by Scugog Mayor Howard Hall who praised the former Mayors for their commitment to the Township for over 40 years. First of the guest speakers was former Scugog Township solicitor Tom Jermyn who said it was an honour to be asked to pay tribute to Jerry and Law- rence. He said that Mr. Malcolm has secured his place in the his- tory of the Township by being elected the first Mayor of Scu- gog Township, and commended him for his even-handed man- ner in dealing with people and situations. . He also had praise for Jerry Taylor, whom he worked with on the Durham Region Police Commission for ten years. "Jer- ry always dealt with people fairly and had excellent diplo- matic skills", he said. Jokingly he said the former " Mayor "had a smile that would ripenbananas". Other speakers during the ; evening were Durham-York M.P.P. Bill Ballinger, who said _ it was great to see the commu- nity take the time to pay tribute to Mr. Taylor and Mr. Malcolm. "Both men have represented the residents of Scugog Town- ship well, and have worked for the best interest of the commu- nity", he said. BN Regional Chairman Gary Herrema had praise for both men, saying that they Region of . Durham has been well served by their presence. "Lawrence Malcolm was not loud or vocal, but was a true gentleman who was a pleasure tosit with," he said. In speaking about Jerry Tay- lor, Mr. Herrema said that he was the most popular and re- spected person at the Region during his term. "There has never been a per- son at the Region who has ever gained the respect and admira- tion of jis pects that Jerry Tay- lor has", Mr. Herrema said. He said of Jerry Taylor, that he will always treasure his as- sociation with Jerry and his wife Sandy during his time in politics. Following the guest speak- ers, Jerry Taylor spoke briefly saying he enjoyed his 16 years in municipal politics and wouldn't have missed the expe- rience. He acknowledged his wife 'Sandra and his family for their. support over the years, saying that the job of a politician is tough and demanding, and sometimes hard on the family. He also said that he would like to publicly thank Adminis- trator Earl Cuddie and the staff at the township office for the good working relationship he had with them for the past ten years. He concluded his address by saying that Lawrence Malcolm had a stabilizing effect on him, and that he enjoyed a good working relationship with him for the betterment of the Town- ship. =~ Lawrence Malcolm also spoke briefly thanking all those who were in attendance, and said that his family was always there when he needed them. "Gwen has been a great asset to my career and has been most supportive", he said of his wife. Mr. Malcolm said that this was his last "big hurrah", and that he had no regrets about anything he did during his time in politics. ; He concluded by saying that Jerry Taylor (who once defeat- ed Mr. Malcolm in the race for Mayor) was the nicest person ever towork with. A number of presentation were made during the evening to the two retired politicians. Retiring Hydro manager Larry Mabley made a presentation of a gift to Mr. Taylor, with whom he had sat on the Hydro Com- mission for ten years. Plaques were also presented to the two men from the Prov- ince of Ontario jointly by Dur- ham- East M.P.P. Sam Cureatz and Durham-York M.P.P. Bill Ballinger. The surprise gift of the eve- ning, was a beautiful grandfa- thers clock, to Lawrence Mal- colm by his son Glenn (who now sits on Scugog council), on be- half of the council and residents of the Township of Scugog. Mr. Taylor was presented with a cheque (of equal value) to be used at his discretion for something he would like for their home. As a final tribute to the two former Mayors of Scugog Town- ship, Mayor Howard Hall called a special meeting of council, and a resolution was passed giving them " the. free- dom of the Township of Scugog in recognition of their long and faithful service to the people of Scugog." A plaque acknowledging their service was then present- ed to Mr. Taylor and Mr. Mal- colm from the Township by Mayor Howard Hall.
