10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 11, 1989 Councillors turn down crossing guard request a Scugog gure) have turned own a request by the principal of S.A, Cawker Public School for a crossing-guard to help In aletter received by council from principal Harry Kieze- brink, he thanks the Township for arranging to have a crossing guard at Simcoe St. and Re- children crossing Simcoe St. in front of the school, gional Road 8, and further re- Random Jottings by ).P. Hvidsten (from page 8) giving the right of way to motor vehicles. I'm sure that | am not the only one to have been confront- ed with a few kids walking up the middle of the road, and when you approach they make no attempt at moving. In fact, if any- thing, it ars almost like they are "daring" you to hit them. If you honk your horn, or go around them, crossing into the other lane of traffic, then make some comment about getting off the road they often shout back rude comments - Just the other day, | was making a right turn onto Water Street when three youths approached the intersection on their bicycles. | slowed down as they neared the cogner, and they stopped almost in front of me in the middle of my lane of traffic. This forced me to come to a stop as well, so | waited for a few seconds for them to walk their bikes off the road, but they stayed there talking. A gesture of my hand to move over to one of the lads met with no response, so | slowly edged around them (staring at them with scorn in my eyes), and they glared at me back like it was | getting in their way. My whole point here is....have parents not been teaching their kids the rules of safety on the road? Have they not drilled them to walk on sidewalks or well off the travelled portion of the road to avoid being hit by a car? To the best of my recollection, "when | was a kid," we al- ways gave the right of way to vehicular traffic. | honestly don't remember ever challenging the driver of any vehicle for the right of the road. We knew the road belonged to the cars and trucks and the sidewalks belonged to us, the pedestrians. Just an observation! quested another guard in front of the school. He said this would assist stu- dents from Cawker Creek to safely cross the Simcoe Street to the school. While council was sympa- thetic, they felt they could not endorse the request. "We have a similar situation on Ottawa Street near Cornish were children have to contend with bus and road traffic" coun- .cillor Pearse said. "If we give the okay to a crossing guard on Simcoe St., we can be sure to be asked for one at the crossing as well", she said. Other councillors wanted more information on the num- ber of students that would be using thé crossing coming from Cawker's Creek. Council passed a motion to inform Mr. Kiezebrink that they do not support a crossing guard at this time. So, what do you think of my sexy new picture? (we had one even sexler, but John wouldn't let me run it) | know you are asking yourself what this is all about, and being the nice guy that | am, | won't keep you in suspense any longer. Someone(s) nominated me in the sexy single category for the Sexy Scugogians (rhymes with slobovians) Contest. Now, while (modestly) | was surprised and somewhat taken aback, it isn't completely without precedent - | am a sexy fellow! Let me clarify that this is not so much a beauty contest as it is a fundraising contest. The judging is not on the amount of skin showing or the poise and grace of the contestants, rather it is on how much they can earn for the Chambers' charity fund. | feel a bit like | am back in school running for student coun- cil. "Vote for Rob, he will outlaw algebra and make lunch an hour longer. You won't strike out if your vote for Rob. A vote for Rob is better than corn on the cob." You get the picture! Late in the race, it is imperative that my big push be under- way now - so instructs my campaign manager (and former con- testant herself, Cathy O.). "It's dog eat dog out there. You are not out to get second place - win, win, WIN! Go out and make the biggest possible fool of yourself, it's for a good cause." I have been racking my brains for a gimmick, something to give me an edge over all the other sexy people out there who have plenty of friends in Sougog - what can | give people that no one else can match? Autograph, lock of hair, undying thanks? Odd suggestions have included; going out for talent night at Rocky's, wearing a sandwich board and walking up Queen Street - just the board - or getting a hair implant for my chest. | know this CommUY is asked to dip into its pockets for worthy causes with some frequency, but in this case, votes can be cast at only a penny a shot. If each of the 15,000 people in Scugog Township votes for me only one time, well, then the Hospital Building Fund will get a nice bit of largess. During the next week, if you see me on the street rattling a can, looking for a vote or two, why not help out? With me as busy as | am, | will even make it easy for those who cannot catch up to me to lay their hefty donation in my eager palm. In the front office of the Port Perry Star is a container (a teddy bear jar - so-o0 cute) with my picture and name on it. Don't be shy, walk right in and exercise your right as a citizen of this democra- cy by voting for ME, as many times as you wish. I am infrequently accused of being sexist, but | know that the young, single ladies out there would rather see me win this category then some (yech) female. So stand tall and make your vote count (look for my face gracing a window near you). Anyone wishing to volunteer for my campaign is welcome; poster-painters, canvassers, megaphone operators and espe- cially media relations positions are open. Now | don't want to be accused of abusing my position. | want to encourage everyone to go out and vote for the other sexy people; Sexy Pregnant Lady, Sexy Couple, Sexy Sales- rson, Sexy Lob Ball Player, Friendliest Bank Teller, Friendliest aiter or Waitress.
