Half the members of coun- cil wanted the parallel parking eliminated on that 'stretch of the road in favour of centre turninglane. They were councillors Neil Hunter, Al Goreski and Mari- lyn Pearce. But councillors Yvonne Christie, Glen Malcolm and Don Cochrane wanted the par- allel parking retained and may- or Hall cast the deciding vote in that favour. Ward 2 councillor Pearce called the decision a "tremen- dous mistake." "Don't use the streets as parking areas. Use them to move traffic," she fumed after the vote was taken. : She said she is very con- cerned about traffic backing up along Water Street right to the intersection of Highway 7A. _ From her observations over the weekend, she said north- bound cars on Water are having to wait to make turns into the plazas on the west side of the road, and at times the traffic back-up went right into the Highway 7A intersection. At one point, she called it a "grid-lock" along Water Street from Casimir south to the high- way. The main reason why four of the seven councillors opted for keeping the parallel parking . on the east side is that already! there is a parking problem, and using a centre turn lane would eliminate 14 spaces in an al- ready congested area of the community. As for the rest of Water Street from Casimir north to Queen, the road is wide enough to allow parking on both sides. Council made it clear on Monday it will monitor the situ- ation from Casimir south to the RUBBER STAMPS Fast Delivery PORT PERRY STAR 235 e703 highway, and if there are prob- lems for motorists tyring to make turns into the plazas, Monday's decision may be re- versed in favour of a centre turninglane. If only we had a bus! To the Editor: There are a great many people, most of them seniors, who live in Port Perry and don't have the use of a car. It is much too far to walk up town to the stores. Surely, there is a small bus that could be used between the school hours twice or three times a day. We older people like to be independent, and would gladly pay for this ser- vice. I received a call yesterday asking me to try again. Hoping I get some response from the Council this time. "If only we had abus."" Yours truly, Emma Cox, Port Perry. Was photo necessary?
