| TWH ERT RERRRRREN SRR" RN. wD am ™ Oshawa women's group Cesarean Birth Support and Education _ by Rob S8treich Giving birth is a frighten- ing enough experience by itself, but when difficulties require a surgical response, it can be traumatic. The Cesarean Birth Sup- port and Education Group is a non-profit organization tail- ored to help women and couples deal with anticipated or un- lanned Cesarean Section irths. Lisa Weston, director of this group feels that they fulfill a need for support and counsel- ling to help women deal with the negative emotions which of- ten stem from a cesarean birth. ~ When the Cesarean Sec- tion was developed, it was in- tended to save lives by prevent- ing the loss of newborns or their mothers through compli- cations. Just a few simple inci- sions and remove the child from the mothers womb - simple. Many doctors have begun to view this technique as a pre- -ventative procedure in cases where difficulties are expected. Some women feel that the c- section makes them feel inade- quate, that they are unable to give birth like a 'normal' wom- an. : Lisa said, "The group helped me to come to terms with mine (c-section) . I really feel that there is a need for it Prince Albert | by Ilean Pugh I have not received any phone calls this week - so the column will be very short. A out there." Lisa had two chil- dren by cesarean, following long and tiring labour, but this 24 year old bookkeeper is deter- mined that the next one will be born naturally. The group of a half dozen steady volunteers and a dozen regular members provides a very relaxed, supportive envi- ronment for the difficult sub- jects to be discussed. "She explained that the group was founded out of con- cern for the lack of resources available to couples expecting or who have experienced a ce- sarean birth. The group holds bi- monthly meetings to discuss topics of interest and listen to guest speakers which start again this fall, breast feeding infants welcome. : For couples expecting a ce- sarean birth, the group offers information to prepare them both factually and emotionally for the surgery, birth and recov- ery. : The group maintains that once a cesarean, not always a cesarean. They offer informa- tion on vaginal birth after ce- sarean as well as support. Until recently, doctors re- quired women to be put under a general anesthetic, their hus- bands were not dllowed to be present and they were separat- ed from their new child for a minimum 24 hours . New atti- tudes have resulted in an im- pravenent of these procedures, ut nothing can make up for the loss of the opportunity to have a child naturally. Lisa says that they are try- ing to help teach prenatal cou- ples how it is possible to avoid cesarean sections. Between 20 and 30 per cent of all births today are by cesare- an section, many of which are unnecessary. "We feel that a generous estimate of necessary cesareans would be about 10 per cent," explained Lisa. "It has been medically proven not to be best for women to goin for elective caesareans. There is a 22 per cent chance of a premature baby with elec- tive," said Lisa. "There is 26 times the risk of maternal moral, A 50 per cent greater risk of disease and the normal risks of anesthesia." The Cesarean Birth Sup- port and Education Group is trying to help doctors under- stand that each pregnancy, la- bour and delivery is different and should be considered sep- arate from the previous one. Among the groups resourc- es is a slide presentation of the procedures most commonly used, A large lending library is available for those interested. Telephone counselling and referrals to hospitals and doc- tors are available. Extra Pre- natal information is organized on demand for couples interest- ed, discussing whatever they areinterested in. Upcoming meetings (held in members' homes) include; Vaginal Birth after Cesarean October 2, Healing the Emo- tional Scars of a C-section No- vember 27, Cesarean Preven- tion January 8, Taking Responsibility for your Birth March 12 and Cesarean Proce- dures and VBAC May 7.
