An anglers haven for 18 years Troski's closing up shop For nearly two decades, Troski's Tackle and Live Bait has been a favourite stop for an- ers on their way to test their uck in Lake Scugog and other lakes in the Kawarthas. ~ But by the end of this. month, the busy shop on the western fringe of Port Perry will shut down for good, the last hook, sinker and dew worm sold. Mae Troski is retiring from the business she started back in 1971. "For the past couple of years, I have thought about re- tiring," she told the Star last Friday as a few early morning customers dropped in to pick up worms, minnows and other ne- cessities for their day's fishing. The house and shop have been sold, and Mae said she is When Russ Korbak gota in a ve, Op n f 0 hed t beware. "I was getting tired of the heavy work, like scrubbing those minnow tanks, There is a lot more to this (business) than just standing behind the coun- ter," she told the Star. But she added how much she has enjoyed living in Port Perry. And she had a big "thank you" for all her customers over the years, especially those who "put up with me when I was so stressed out and bitchy I could not even stand myself." She said in some ways she will miss the business, but in Gamblers cruise fo tourney win (From page 26) lowed just a pair of hits and one run for a 5-1 Greenbank victory. Not only has she sold fish- ing tackle of all kinds, live bait like minnows, worms, leeches, frogs and crayfish, Mae has dis- pensed a fair amount of free ad- vice over the years as well, "I have regular customers who call me from as far away as Buffalo and Virginia. They want to know how the fishing is, the ice conditions or the weath- er," she said. When asked how many hours she works each week, she just smiled and replied "how many hours are there in a | week." She got into the business almost by accident back in 1971 when her children started sell- ing worms road-side to make a little pocket money. "I could see the demand. From worms to minnows, then the tackle," and pretty soon the business was no longer just a part time sideline. She admits she has had some interesting experiences with anglers over the years. "They ask all kinds of ques- tions, and some of them expect you to almost point out which hole to put the line through the ice," she said with a smile. And she recalls one time when Hatie Till was working in the shop and four guys came through the door to buy dew worms. "One of them took a dew 'worm out, cleaned it off and swallowed it whole," she recalls. Convenience and location "have helped make Troski's so popular with anglers over the years, plus the fact they know "1 usually have exactly the kind of pal or tackle they are looking or." As for what is the best bait for fishing on Lake Scugog, for ickerel, Mae didn't hesitate an instant in saying "minnows in winter and leeches in summer." Leeches? Live wrig- gling, black leeches. :. "Alot of people don't like to handle them. I didn't at first," she said as she reached into the tank of water to scoop several out with her hand. "But they are the best." Until the end of the month, Troski's will offer anglers some real ins with a closing out sale, and Scugog Tackle on Wa- ter Street has offered to buy the un-sold stock. By early August, the doors will be closed, the walls bare and the counters empty, and an- glers will be going elsewhere for tackle, bait and free advice.
