28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 1, 1989 Three big wins put Gamblers in topspot (~ Going into last weeks fastball action the Greenbank Gamblers were sitting in second place in the Oshawa City and District "A" Division, just one point behind Stouffville and one point ahead of the Oshawa Merchants. } Also the Gamblers had three games scheduled for the week and all three games were with Stouffville and the Oshawa Mer- chants. So the Greenbank team had their fate in their own hands. When the dust had cleared after the three games the Gamblers had won all three and taken over top spot by a single point over Stouffville. Last Monday night in Green- bank Park the Gamblers were cruising along witha 3-0 lead behind Mark Goreski when Oshawa suddenly came to life in the sixth inning to score 3 runs and tie the game at 3-3. But in the bottom of the seventh inning after two were out Paul Goreski lined a long double to right field to set the stage for Brian Till. And Brian Till didn't let the Gamblers down as he pro- mptly drilled a shot up the middle to score Paul Goreski with the winning run. Mark Goreski was the winning pitcher for Greenbank with Steve Crummy taking the loss for Oshawa. Rodd Real and Paul Goreski had two hits each to lead the Gambler attack with Dave- Bacon, Trevor Till, George Red- shaw, Brian Till and Mark Goreki rounding out the Greenbank hitting. The key blow in the game for Greenbank was George Red- shaws two out double in the third inning to break a scoreless tie. On Wednesday night in Stouff- ville the Gamblers met the Betz Pool boys and behind the three hit pitching of Russ Korbak they stopped Stouffville by a 4-1 score. The Greenbank squad struck in the game and then held off Stouff- ville as Korbak was on top of his game and only allowed a single run in the fourth inning. In the Gamblers half of the se- cond inning Rodd Real was safe. on an infield error and John Jeffs followed with a long home run that rolled to the road in the huge Stouffville ball park, and Green- bank were in front by a 2-0 score. In the third inning Terry Till and Trevor Till both scored to make the score 4-0 and that was all that Korbak would need to lock up the victory. Stouffville did score a run in the fourth as Mark Joslin, John Tait and George Burkholder combin- ed to plate a run but Russ Korbak was unhittable after that. Greenbank picked up five hits off the offerings of John Annis with Terry Till, John Jeffs, Brian Till, Rodd Real and George Red- shaw each hitting safely. On Sunday afternoon the Oshawa Merchants again visited Greenbank Park and again the Gamblers struck early enroute to a 4-0 win. Terry Till singled to open the game but was nipped at second on John Fosters attempted sacrifice. Brian Till singled to put runners on the corners and Foster scored on Don Beatons infield out. Then Rodd Real belted a long drive over the center field fence and the Gamblers had an early 3-0 lead. That was all the scoring until Rodd Real again blasted a long home run over the right field fence in the sixth inning and Greenbank won the game 4-0 and moved into first place in the process. Russ Korbak pitched the six hit shutout and was in control of the game with the exception of the first inning when Oshawa had men on first and third but Korbak bore down and struck out the side, an excellent performance by the veteran right hander. Rodd Real was the batting star of the game with his two home runs and 3 RBI's. Terry Till had a pair.of Gambler hits and Brian Till also hit safely. John Logeman and Steve Crummy shared the Oshawa pit- ching with Rodd Real banging a home run off each Oshawa pitcher. This coming weekend sees the Gamblers in Burlington at the Senior "A" 0.A.S.A. Tournament. Also during the next few weeks Greenbank will be at the Minden Tournament, at the League Championships in Stouffville and atthe O.A.S.A. Bantams proceed to playdowns This week, the Canadian Tire Bantams had a home and home series against Orangeville with the winner being eligible for the "All Ontario Playdowns" to be held in Mitchell on the August 26th and 27th weekend. What was thought to be tough competition turned out to be an easy 17-2 and 20-4 win for Port Perry. Pitchers Brett Puckrin and Richard Brough each won a game. On Friday night, a regular league game was played in Greenbank against Unionville with Port Perry winning 3-2. Brett Puckrin pitched for the win with 8 strike-outs and only 4 hits allow- ed. Brett pitched a good game with the Port team leading 3-2 going in- to the last inning, but Niagara Falls was able to score 4 runs which were enough to win the game. Mites place second in baseball tournament As they have all season, the Taylor Petro Can Mites from Port Perry turned in a fine per- formance over the weekend to place second in a tournament in Gravenhurst. It was the best tournament outing for the team so far this seaons, said coach Gord Wil- liamson. "We had a strong team ef- fort from all the players," he said about the second place fin- ishin Gravenhurst. The Mites won their first three games by scores of 9-5 over Dunnville, 8-4 over Bra- malea B, and 10-7 over Thorn- hill. Then they ran up against the tough Bramalea A squad and came out on the shortend of a 6-b score. But they went down fight- ing, and in fact had two on base with with two out in the final in- ning, but just could manage the - hit that would have pushed the tying or winning run across the plate. Jason Heyworth pitched all four games for the Mites, and the team got some fine work at the plate and in the field from Shane Norton and Doug Shortt. In York-Durham League play to date this season, the Mites are in third spot with a record of six wins and seven losses. prepare for the OASA Mite C touranment to be held in Port Perry August 25-27. Napanee is expected to be the tough competition at the OASA tournament. Melissa hot at bat Greenbank wins Greenbank Garden Centre does it again, two in a row and still undefeated.
