Entry forms are also available for the Demoli- tion Derby which will be held on Friday evening before the fair, August 25. As there will be only 30 cars accepted if you wish to be in- cluded do hurry to get your form. On Saturday morning a very spectacular and costly fire occur- red when the new hen barn at Scan Farms just east of Blackstock was destroyed. The sight of such a blaze makes everyone aware of the extreme danger of fire especially at this time of great drought. What a terrible sight those forest fires must be! Obituary Mrs. Flora Samells enjoyed a - visit and lunch with Mrs. Jean (Samells) Bailey and her daughter Lynn at their cottage on Scugog Island one day last week. Dale and Janet VanCamp, Mary and Michael enjoyed a few days away camping in cottage country last week. Many from this area attended various sessions of the Bob- caygeon Fiddle Contest on Friday and Saturday. The Fiddle Contest here in Blackstock will be held on Saturday evening, October 21. Draws were won by Fred Dayes Frederick Dayes was born February 27, 1911, in the town of Beverley, East Yorkshire, England, to Herbert and Harriet Dayes, fishmongers. Fred was number seven in a family of eight: Florrie, George, 'Elsie, Tom, Alfred, Frank, Fred and Evelyn. Orphaned at the age of four, Fred was taken in by sister Florrie to raise along with three sons of her own. In 1919, Florrie was widowed and it became necessary for Fred and "her sons to be placed in the Bar- nardo orphanage in London until she could afford to keep them herself. From London, Fred was placed in a group home in the town of Blewbury, Berkshire county. He remained here for ap- proximately one year and nine months and then in March 1921, Fred was sent to Canada. In Canada, Fred was placed first with the Hanna family in Janetville where he remained on- ly nine months, and then he came to live with the Clarence Ginn family of Cadmus. Here he re- mained until he was eighteen, at which time he was free to seek employment wherever he chose. He attended Cadmus Public School and the Cadmus United Church where he sang in the choir. Fred was a member of the Cadmus United Church, the Blackstock United Church, and the Port Perry United Church respectively. In his youth, Fred worked as a farm-hand at various - local farms: W. Philp, M. McKee, 0. McQuade, and R. Brown at Cadmus Grist Mill to name a few. On April 20, 1935, Fred married Mabel Elford of Cartwright Township, and they settled down to a life of farming. They have liv- ed all their married life in Cart- wright Township except for the past year and three-quarters, first, on a farm on the "McKee Line" (4th Conc.), then the "McGill place" (5th Conc.), the "Hyland farm" (6th Conc.), and finally purchasing their own farm in 1956 (5th Conc.). In the early years of marriage, Fred also delivered the rural mail for the Nestleton area. Fred and Mabel have four children: Alan, Clifford, Lorraine and Jim. After the children arrived, Fred sought ex- tra employment to supplement the farming income, at various places settling with bus driving in the end. He drove bus over a period of approximately thirty years for C. Garten, K. Burley, Kathleen Watts, Meta Swain, Dorothy Beech and Gladys Potts. On Sunday after enjoying the Bobcaygeon Fiddle Contest, Jean Mabhaffy along with Moira Fallis called on her cousin Mrs. Myrtle Walker in Fenelon Falls area. Neil and Elcanor Werry have returned home from an enjoyable bus trip to the Maritime pro- vinces. They were away for two weeks. Grant and Heather McLaughlin, Carla and Abby have returned from a motor trip of two weeks to the Maritimes. They travelled through the Cana- dian provinces going and return- ed home by the U.S. route. Sandi Little and John Fry were guests of honour at a Jack and Jill Shower held on Saturday after- noon at the home of Harold and Melanie Wright. This barbeque and party was attended by school chums and broomball players. On Sunday afternoon Sandi Lit- tle was guest of honour at a fami- ly bridal shower held at the home of her aunt Mrs. Linda McMillan, Prince Albert. Following the opening of the many beautiful gifts, Sandi thanked everyone for the gifts and the best wishes on her upcoming marriage. A social time was enjoyed. Amanda Strong and Rebecca Dennie enjoyed picking raspberries at Whitakers a week ago. It was hard work In this heat, but the girls kept each other company, and earned a lit- tle spending money to boot. The raspberries at Whitakers' Berrie Farm, on Shirley Road by the Oshawa Road, are lush, ripe and delicious. Mrs. Whitaker invites you to come out and pick your own, or buy some already picked. He transported many children over the years to the Durham Christian Elementary and Secon- dary Schools in Bowmanville, to Bowmanville High School, and to Courtice High School. He made many long distance charter trips as well, which he enjoyed so much because of his love of travelling. In July 1965, Fred went home to England for the first time in 44 years to rediscover his roots. Fred retired from bus driving in 1977 and was honoured with a retirement dinner early in 1978 by his employer and co-workers. Fred and Mabel remained on the farm after retirement and con- centrated on cultivating a large vegetable garden each year from which the children often benefited. In October of 1987, Fred and Mabel gave up farm life and mov- ed to Port Perry. This was the Construction has begun on the new parking lot at the Chalk Lake Spring on Regional Roatl' 23. Fred will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Fred has been predeceased by his brothers and sisters but has many nephews and nieces living in England. Fred leaves to mourn him, his wife Mabel, children: Alan, Clif- ford, Lorraine, Jim and their families which include 11 grand- children and one great- grandchild. A funeral service was held at the Wagg Funeral Home in Port Perry on Tuesday July 18, 1989 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. R. LePage of- ficiated. Interment Nestleton United Cemetery. Appointments for the Durham, Victoria Order of Nurses The Durham Region Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses is pleased to announce the appoint- ment of Ms. Sheila David to the position of Executive Director. Ms. David is a Registered Nurse (Hamilton Civic Hospitals Graduate) and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University. Ms. David brings to the VON a varied background in Nursing and Business. She has held a variety of nursing positions in hospitals as well as community organizations and has most recently left a position with an In- ternational medical products manufacturer. Ms. David is an elected Board member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) representing the geographical area bounded by Ajax, Peter- borough and Belleville. She is an active Board member of the Allergy Information Association. As an ASPO certified Childbirth Educator in the Lamaze Method of Prepared Childbirth, Ms. David has been teaching in the Oshawa area for three and a half years. The Durham Region Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses is also pleased to announce the ap- pointment of Ms. Gwen M. Berry to the position of Associate Ex- ecutive Director Ms. Berry is a Registered Nurse (Montreal General Hospital Graduate) and has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Western Ontario. For the past 15 years Ms. Berry has held a variety of positions within the Victorian Order of Nurses. She has worked as & District Nurse, Supervisor anc Executive Director in several VON Branches (London: Middlesex, Kitchener-Waterloo, Perth-Huron) and most recently as Acting Executive Director in the Durham Region Branch. Ms. Berry is an electec member of the Durham Chapter Executive of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. She serves on a number of com- munity committees. Ms. Berry resides in Port Perry.
