48 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 1, 1989 Nine little ducklings waddle in for a visit _ by Rob Streich Five weeks ago, Shirley Love had nine little strangers waddle into her life. One day in mid-June, Shir- ley came back to her home in Caesarea to find a handful of little yellow balls of fluff hiding in her Greenhouse. She heard a rustling be- neath a sheet of plastic, and suspected it was the cat. Ima- gine her surprise when she lift- Scugog. A predator of some sort probably grabbed her, but the ducklings escaped and just con- tinued walking until they came to rest under the sheet of plas- tic. Shirley has never had any previous experience with duck- lings, but she quickly set about putting together a little cage to protect them from cats, fox or other predators. The ducks are now a mot- tled brown and black, and their wings are nearly ready to sup- _ port them. Shirley estimates 3 What would you do if nine feathered friends walked into your yard? Keep them of course. These mallard ducklings mysteriously appeared in Shirley Love's greenhouse, and for the past five weeks she has watched over them. In two weeks more, she feels they will be ready to leave the nest, and she will release them in the wild. ed it up to uncover a snowstorm of baby mallard ducks. Shirley looked around for the mother, but she was unable to locate any ducks in the near- by field, nor in neighboring yards. She suspects that the mother was taking her clutch through the field and across her backyard on her way to Lake birds were old enough to eat milk-soaked bread for the first meal, and she was able to pur- chase duck starter for them from the feed mill. They still retreat into the corner of the cage when some- one is nearby, showing a healthy distrust of humans. In speaking with a biolo- ist at the Ministry of Natural sources, she was informed that she is taking the proper ac- tions. When she releases them in two weeks near the Nonquon Conservation Area, they will have a chance of survival. Shirley says she has en- joyed caring for them, watching them move around the cage and seeing them make mud ies (taking dirt up in their aks and dumping it into their Scugog Island by Mrs. Earl Reader At last August is here, sometimes the favourite month for an annual vacation. "I have really enjoyed hav- ing them here," Shirley said, "I love to watch them play - all diving into the pool (a large plastic pan) at one time. "It will really break my heart to let them go."
