Younger set loves annual junior tennis tournament by Rob Streich - This weekend will mark the fourth year of the Junior Tennis Tournament in Port Perry, and the talented contest- ants promise to provide thrill- ing play. . The level of keen, com- petitive tennis expected this weekend is always a great deal % fun to watch and participate n, Depending upon the num- ber of entrants, several match- es may begin Friday night, but Kids can The Pine Ridge Skating School will be holding its 8th Annual Fall Power Skating School from Aug. 26 to Sept 2nd. Since starting in 1982 the School has grown to the point, where, it now offers in- tournament lay will go on all day on Saturday, August 12. Presently, more than 20 young people have registered for the Tournament, already an increase in participation over last year's numbers. Sign up deadline is by six P.M. Thursday, August 10. The draw will be posted at the courts on Friday, as will infor- mation on whether the matches will begin on Friday night or Saturday morning. Officials recommend that all contest- ants should check the postings atnoon. : Entrants all must pay a fee (as yet undetermined, but guar- anteed to be minimal) and bring an unused can of tennis balls. An extra charge may be added onto non-members. Jay Neill is in charge of this event and any queries can be directed to him or other members of the Port Perry Ten- nis Club executive. Jay is well known with all club members and has partici- pated in the spring tennis les- sons and the summer camps for juniors over the past three years. Mr. Neill has continued coaching students in a twice-a- week morning camp in order to help them keep their skills sharp and to provide them with extra playing time and a few pointers. The session begins with a warm up which involves prac- ticing specific strokes, but it rapidly goes into actual play . This type of camp has been go- ing on for the last few years, as an extension, or supplement for the serious tennis students. All of the junior players who have been coming out to work with Jay on Tuesday and Thursday will be taking part in the Tournament this weekend. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 9, 1989 -- 27 Lindsay Parry hits grand slam homerun for Standard Electric On July 24, 1989, Standard Elec- tric beat Cowboy Bobs by the score of 16 to 10 at the South Diamond. For Standard Electric, Paul Linton and Rick Olaisen each hit a two-run homerun while Lindsay Parry connected for a grand slam homerun. Brad Lemieux made a couple of good catches while Brent Harper and Rob Romano made some good plays at short and second including a double play. Darren Hope, Joe Broadworth and Kevin Pearce each connected for a couple of good hits while Jake Waznicky and Brad Richardson made some good defensive plays at short and se- cond base. Joe Broadworth caught a hard hit ball to center field. On July 31, 1989, Pineridge Sports beat Cowboy Bobs by the score of 15 to 10. Jason Kane and Richie Tripp each had a good night at the plate, hitting two doubles and earning six RBIs each for Pineridge. Chad Garvoch pitched two no run innings to earn the win for Pineridge Sports while Danny Brown played a strong game as catcher. For Cowboy Bobs, Mike Mit- chell connected for a triple to drive in three runs while Allen Birchall and Dwayne Vanderlight each had a couple of good hits. Jake Waznicky pitched three excellent innings of ball, allowing only three runs while Mike Slug- gett made some good running cat- ches while Allen Birchall caught a high fly ball in left field. At the South Diamond, Ken- tucky Fried Chicken edged X L Eagles by the score of 11 to 10. Gary Norton provided the pit- ching for Kentucky Fried while James Paterson connected for a single and Travis Kennedy played well defensively. Mark Goreski had pitched a strong game and allowed eight hits (all singles) and many of the infield variety; the Gambler defense was strong and their bat- ters had collected six hits but once again they had not put enough runs on the score board. So the trip to the Senior "A" Tournament did not turn out as well as the team expected but ex- perience can only be gained by playing the best teams and the Senior '"A" exposure could be beneficial in the next few weeks at the League playoffs and the 0.A.S.A.
