s J : . ah IRE 4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 9, 1989 " : ~ by Rob Streich To commemorate 70 years since the formation of the Kins- men organization, District 8 Kinsmen commissioned local artist Les Parkes to produce a painting. Kinsmen from Central and Northern Ontario wanted a work suitable to be hung at the national headquarters in Cambridge, Ontario. They were hoping for a way to com- memorate the man who found- ed Kinsmen in Hamilton those many years ago, Hal Rogers. Les undertook the project many months a without much knowledge of the organi- zation. But as he worked, his interest grew and he began de- voting part of his spare time to research and investigation of the Kinsmen's past. He liked what he found, and that was turned into energy for the painting. The watercolour which he has just completed is a labour of \ love, Les relates. The actual 65 hours of painting, do not reflect the amount of thought and en- ergy which is evident in the moving piece. The focus of the painting is founder Hal Rogers, his com- passion and warmth shine through the canvas. At the cen- tre are the Canadian and Kins- men flags, reminding observers that the Kinsmen are an all- canadian service club, and very successful for their size. The major elements in the painting are all representative of the projects which the Kins- men have undertaken over the years and continue to be in- volved in. Acts of will like the construction of the first pri- vate hospital in the Ethiopian relief effort. The decades of fund raising for Cystic Fibrosis (their major project), including their contri- bution of a specially developed CF roge for 1990. There is a prominent rep- resentation of the first effort undertaken by the Kingmen, the "Milk for Britains" cam- paign. Mr. Parkes has developed a painting which shows a rep- resentation of the events in the styles of the day. His art re- flects the mood and timbre of the era in which the campaign took place, giving the picture an overall timeless quality. Mr. Parkes was pleased to be chosen to work on this pro- ject. He enjoyed the actual work saying, "it was easy to do because I was emotional over the whole thing - you empa- thized with the people and events." District Eight Chairman Dave Robinson was overjoyed with the resulting work, saying that the final result was far above and beyond the original commission. Mr. Robinson said, "We wanted to give the Association a gift of love. Les has helped us todojust that."
