Rob, 16, and Dieter, 17, have been pen-pals for two years now but recently met for the first time. Dieter, who lives in a small European country called Liech- tenstein, arrived in Canada on July 17 for a one-month stay with the Johnston family. During his stay, Rob and his family have been showing Diet- er some of Ontario's splendor, including trips to Niagara Falls, downtown Toronto, and Wonderland. "He was really brave (at Won- derland)," Rob's mother Jean Johnston said. "He went on all these rides when we were too scared. We also took him on the White Water Canyon ride and didn't tell him he was going to get wet." They also crossed the border for a camping trip at New York's Darrien Lake. "Dieter didn't sleep for the whole night," said Mrs. John- ston. "He's not used to sleeping on the 'ground or eating out- side." Dieter said that although there are campgrounds in Liechtenstein, he has never gone camping before. One difference between Onta- rio and Liechtenstein and Can- ada Dieter notices is driving techniques. When it comes to driving, Dieter said Canadians are in the slow lane. The speed limit in Liechtenstein is 130 km/h, but many people drive at speeds up to 200 km/h. The boys became pen-pals through a service called the In- ternational Youth Service. The IYS matches the applicants ages and interests in order to find a suitable pen-pal for each person. ' Although Rob has been tak- ing German at school, the boys write letters to each other in English. "I know some German but not enough," explained Rob. "Dieter speaks in low German and I have been studying high Ger- man." _ Both Rob and Dieter have an interest in sports and entered the Junior Tennis Tournament held on the weekend. Dieter returns to Liechten- stein on Thursday. The two boys are hoping they can get to- gether again next summer at Dieter's home. -- PSYCHOTHERAPY -- -- DIVORCE MEDIATION -- -- STRESS MANAGEMENT -- Port Perry Counselling Services MEDICAL ASSOCIATES, 462 PAXTON ST.
