20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 15, 1989 Sunday evening Fairground Community service Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Next Sunday evening a com- munity evening hymn service will be held at the Blackstock Fairgrounds at 7 p.m.. This ser- vice with each of the five chur- ches of Cartwright participating will mark the beginning of Blackstock Fair week when a large percentage of our communi- ty will be involved in the annual event. Everyone is invited to come, to bring a lawn chair if you wish, and enjoy the informal ser- vice of music and word with your friends and neighbours. : Blackstock area lost one of its. native sons with the passing of' Weir Swain. Sympathy is extend- ed to his wife Meta and his brothers and sister and many nieces and nephews. The funeral is being held on Monday in Blackstock United Church. Last weekend Bill and Ruth Marconi attended a MacDonald family gathering in Ruth's hometown of Englehart, Northern Ontario. Grace Hastings of Port Perry and Dorothy Venning of Blackstock attended the first reu- nion of the Class 1930-31 of Peter- borough Normal School since they left 58 years ago. This very special event took place on August 10 at Rock Haven, Peterborough. Lots of things are going on in the Cadmus area recently. Halie Vogel celebrated her 16th birth- day with a surprise party on, August 4th. The Russells had her two nieces Sarah and Aimee for a two weeks vacation from Wind- sor. On August 11 Amy Weber celebrated her 6th birthday and Lori (Cole) Beer celebrated her 23rd birthday with a family gathering. Lori's great aunts Marie and Kay Baumchen are here from Los Angeles for a few weeks and her great uncle Joe Baumchen is here from Chicago. The annual Otto-fest which is a big pig roast for all friends and neighbours was held on August 13 at Otto and Caron Weber's home. Lot's of fun in Cadmus. The winners at the weekly Tuesday evening card party on the 8th were: 1. Verna Robinson, 2. Bernice Wells, 3. Carl Gimblet, 4. Bruce Bright, 5. Lesley Taylor, 6. Eileen Warder, Low - Pat Por- rill. Draws were won by Lesley Taylor, Dorothy Venning, Ethel Goble and Ross McRoberts.. Julie Byers left on Friday for a two and half week trip with the Enniskillen Rangers to tour Switzerland and three other Euro- pean Countries. No doubt we will hear about the details on her return. The Blackstock Agricultural Society held its August meeting at the Rec Centre on the regular date of Thursday. President . David Petrie conducted the business which included finaliza- tion of plans for both the Demoli- tion Derby on Friday, August 25 and the 124th Fair on the 26th. There will be only 30 cars ac- cepted for the Derby - As there are still a few openings left, if you are interested you are urged to contact Secretary Joyce Kelly as soon as possible. A programme of Junior Olym- pics for the children will be con- ducted during the fair afternoon by Marilyn Green and Leah Frew.
