PORT PERRY STAR -- SAN Tuesday, August 22, 1989 -- 35 Port Perry to host 0.A.S.A. Mite Championship On August 26 & 27 the Taylor Mites will be hosting the 0.A.S.A. Provincial Mite "C" Champion- ship. Teams will be coming from Osgoode, St. Mary's, Napanee, Elmira, Fergus, Campbellford & Gravenhurst. These 9 & 10 year old boys are sure to provide good entertainment all weekend. This is the only 0.A.S.A. Champion- ship held in Port Perry this year so come down to the ball diamonds on Saturday & Sunday and give our Port Perry boys your support. The Taylor Ford Mites have had a very successful year thanks to the coaching of Gord William- son and Don Heyworth and the hard work of each and every player. They have played in the York Durham League finishing in 4th place. They also won the Con- solation trophy in the Gravenhurst Tournament. Meanwhile, in Stouffville over the weekend, the Port Perry Mites turned in a great team effort as they won the Con- solation championship for the York Durham league The tournament ont format di- vided the teams into two divi- sions. The top four teams in league standings competed in the A side, while the bottom four teams were grouped in the Bor Consolation side. Mosquitos at Durham Cup During the past week-end the Scugog Mosquito boys select soc- cer team participated in The Durham Cup. This tournament was for house league select teams from the Durham Region. On Saturday, in the first game they came up against a team from Oshawa. Although they suf- fered a 6-0 defeat the boys put a brave fight. The second game on Saturday was a different story. After con- ceding the first goal to the Whit- by team, the boys came storming back with three unanswered goals to take the game 3-1. Scoring for Scugog was Sandy Mark, Jeff Clarke and Aaron LaFontaine. Excellent goal tending from Kristan Wootton helped preserve the win. On Sunday they were up against Darlington needing a win to advance to the semi-finals. Although they played well Darl- ington came out on top by a score of 3-1. Scoring the lone marker for Scugog was Mike Smith. The select team consisted of, Jeff Clarke, Matt Baxter, Alex Janson, Scott Curtis, Justin Woot- ton, Kristan Wootton, Sandy Mark, Kevin Gray, Mike Smith, Kevin Hobbs, Aaron LaFontaine, Matt Cameron. The boys went out Satur- day and played some fine base- ball winning their three games by comfortable margins. They started with an 11-1 LABOUR Consolation * victory over Scarborough, then dumped Bramalea by a score of 11-6, and finished off the day on a strong note with a 20-0 shut- out against Thornhill. They had to return to Stouffville the next day for the Consolation championship against Scarborough, and Port Perry was in fine form from start to finish as the team rolled toan 11-6 victory Head on Gord William- son praised the work of his team in wining the four games, say- ing it was a real team effort. Jason Heyworth was the winning pitcher in all four games, and he'll be throwing for the Mites in the OASA tourna- ment to be held in Port Perry this weekend, August 26-27.
