As the bowlers battled from end to end under partially cloudy skies, aloha music played over a loud speaker from the clubhouse. The tournament included two ten-end games, with four players on each team. A dinner and program including singing and skits followed the games. The new lawn bowling facility open on Aug. 23, 1986, said past president Stan Rickard. "It rained the hardest I've ever seen it rain in my life," Mr. Rickard said about opening day. The club holds a fun tourna- ment every year close to the an- niversary date. Before the new facility was built, Mr. Rickard said the membership in Port Perry was falling. The old lawn bowling club was located across the road from the IGA on Queen Street. Mr. Rickard said the lawns were undersized, the clubhouse was falling apart and a good rainfall would mean the greens would be wet for days because of their low lying location. Mr. Rickard believes the club opened in the early 1900s and in its final years, membership stayed constant at about 25. Now at the new facility, the club boasts a membership of over 100, and state-of-the-art facili- ties. He said the club took a chance and built the playing field with no earth or loam. Instead they used a sand base. "One of my friends said 'I'll eat my shirtif that grows grass,' "Mr. Rickard remembers. Three years later, the greens look terrific, thanks to the work of a member who cares for the greens. . The Port Perry Lawn Bowl- ing Club plays three one-month series each season. League play is held on Tues- day and Wednesday nights. On Thursdays, beginners are wel- come to come out to the greens for coaching sessions. . Port Perry is in District 14 and faces stiff opposition from 16 other clubs in the district. Mr. Rickard said some of the other clubs include Cobourg, Whitby, Peterborough, Fenelon Falls and Cannington. He said most of the tourna- ments are held during the day on Thursdays and Saturdays. "A lot of the members are re- tired," Mr. Rickard said. He would like to see that change. "We had about 80 kids here from the high school for a ses- sion," he said. ' A physical education teacher introduced the students to the sport. He brought the students to the facility about two times a week for one month. Mr. Rickard said the re- sponse from the students was good but none of them signed up for league play. "Young folks nowadays have so many other things going on," he said. The youngest players at the club are in their thirties, Mr. Rickard said, but he would like to see the club inticing a few younger members. The club is holding a get ac- quainted with lawn bowling day on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 1:30- 4:30 p.m. The executive wants local merchants and council to spon- or a three-member team from their businesses. Practice sessions are availa- ble on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. for anyone who wants to partici- pate. Most participants will be first-time bowlers though.
