Pederson's low tender wins garbage contract Commencing October 1, 1989, garbage pickup in Scugog Sonne p will be undertaken by the Pederson group of Ux- ge. Council took the action Monday morning on the recom- mendation of administrator Earl Cuddie who reported to council the Pederson tender bid was the lowest. He also said that Pederson has a good track record with the Township of Uxbridge, where they have been picking up garbage for a number of years. In awarding the contract to Pederson, members of coun- cil agreed they had ro choice in making the change from Brown Sanitation, who has been the garbage collector in Scu- gog for many years. "We were very happy with the job that Mr. Brown was doing for the Township", councillor Cochrane said. ut in the end it came down to dollars. The Pederson bid was cose to $1.00 cheaper per stop than that of Brown Sanita- tion, and council felt they could not justify the difference. Three bids were received by tender for a two year con- tract: Pederson was lowest with a rate of $1.08 per stop in the first year, and $1.13 in the second year. B.F.I. quoted pickup costs at an average of $1.15 per stop for two years, and Brown's Sanitiation quoted costs between $2.02 and $2.09 per stop for a two year contract. According to information from the AIDS Education Ser- vice, a department of the Re- gional Health Unit, there are now 12 known cases of the dis- ease in the Region. Andrea Okazaki, a nurse with the AIDS Education De- partment, told the Star last week, these 12 cases are Region wide, and not isolated in any particular area of Durham. As well in Durham Region, 71 people have been tested posi- tive for HIV, which means they are carrying the virus that may lead to AIDS. A recent study in San Fran- cisco suggests that about 50 per cent of those who contract HIV will eventually develop AIDS. Ms. Okazaki said the figure of 71 people who have tested positive for HIV is probably low. She said it is difficult to ac- curately determine the number of positive cases with so many people moving in and out of the Region.
