Cummings won this close game by a score of 21- 18. Skates, lessons Figure skating, like hockey or ringette, can get expensive for parents. But getting a youngster started at a young age can be done for a fairly modest cost. The big costs for figure skaters start to occur after a girl - or boy has been skating for sev- eral years and needs better skates and private lessons from askatingprofessional. Linda Holtby, treasurer of the Port Perry Figure Skating Club told the Star last week that for a beginner, decent skates are available in the $50 to $60 price range. Registration fees in Port Perry are $180 and that in- cludes $10 for the CFSA and $10 for the cost of the skating carnival at the end of the sea- son. The $180 gets the child on the ice twice each week for 27 weeks. For practising, the very young skaters can wear loose fitting sweat pants and tops and gloves. As the child gets older, practise outfits may include tights, skirt and sweater, which 11 cost about $100. A fancy, competition skat- ing skirt can cost in the $100 range, or higher, depending on the quality. can be costly Figure skates for interme- diate and advanced skaters are expensive. They can range from $200 to $400, and for the top of the line skates, prices of $700- $800 are not unusual. And that's just for the boots. The blades will run another $115 to $250. Once a skater gets older and needs larger skates, the cost goes up. Likewise for the skater who is doing jumps and needs a better quality skate for support. Figure skates should be sharpened after every 30-40 hours on the ice and the cost is about $7. Private lessons from a pro- fessional working with the PPFSC range from $5 to $8 for 16 minutes. And for skaters with 3-4 ex- perience, three private lessons 'per week (patch, dance and free skate)is the norm. Some skaters may want more private lessons. And then there are the off- season schools where the fees average $200 for four weeks, just to get on the ice, plus the cost ofindividual lessons . As a youngster progresses in figure skating and starts to learn the difficult moves and jumps, top of the line skates are a virtual necessity that can pre- vent serious injury. In this article, we turn our attention to ringette, a fairly new winter sport, but one that is growing in popularity each year. Parents out-fitting a youngster for ringette have a fairly wide price range to choose from, especially when it comes to things like the skates. We asked Dave Ballingall of Pineridge Sports on Queen Street in Port Perry to come up with a "middle of the road" price list for new equipment. Dave said that parents buy- ing ringette equipment for their daughter, should take great pains to make sure all equip- ment fits properly. In fact, he suggests strong- ly parents should have their children try on their equipment before they leave the store. For example, he said, "you can buy a pair of elbow pads that may fit properly, but they aren't much good if they just protect the elbow and leave the forearm (between the glove) or the upper arm (between the shoulder pad) un-protected." With a couple of exceptions, hockey equipment can be used by ringette players. The "jill strap" is one excep- tion, and there are protective "girdles" on the market made exclusively for ringette, along with ringette gloves. But some players may choose to wear a hockey girdle and hockey gloves, which have a little heavier padding. Mr. Ballingall suggests that parents should never try to "cut corners: when it comes to buying quality protection for the head and face. As for the rest of the equip- ment, just how much parents send depends on the age of the player, the level of competition she is playing at, and for some, the "style" of game the girl plays. The following is a list of representative prices for rin- gette equipment. It should be noted that this is for "middle of the road" quality, and parents may find the identical piece of equipment at slightly higher or lower prices. Pineridge Sports, for exam- ple always discounts equipment 10 per cent and offers 5 per cent off skates. Ringette girdle, $45; jill strap, $16; helmet, $45-55; face mask (wire) $20, (plastic) $40; shoulder pads, $35-40; shin pads, $256-36; elbow pads $15; pants, $50; skates, $655-100; throat guard, $16; practise jer- sey, $16; stick $10-15; ringette gloves, $50 (hockey gloves, $30) carryingbag, $36. The total is $468, plus eight percent PST. In Port Perry, the registra- tion fee for ringette players is $150. » "0, HOCKEY SEASON CCM, Cooper, Bauer, Tackla ERG S Queen Street - Port Pe PHONE 985-2839 SS 7 7 7 7 7 72 2 7 7 Z 72 Zz 2 2k 72 0 % And since Port Perry teams play out-of-town teams, parents can expect to pay for travel to the games, snacks, etc. Most local ringette teams will play in more than two tour- naments (out of town) durin the season and one or two o these may involve overnight ac- commodation.
