The resident, who lives near Perry St. at the end of the water line on Mary, told the Star Monday morning, his fami- ly began to notice a foul taste and odour in the tap water about ten days ago. The odour and taste did not disappear and he notified the Region when his 18-month old daughter developed an intesti- nal dis-order. ~ "That may be just a co- incidence," he told the Star, but we are concerned." He said when an inspector from the Region tested the tap water Friday, he told the family not to drink it until further test- ing was done. An official with the Re- gion's water services depart- ment told the Star Monday af- ternoon that asking the family not to drink the water was a pre- caution. "We want to be one the safe side." The official said the foul odour and taste would be caused by hydrogen sulfide which is neutralized by the ad- dition of chlorine, whigh also kills any bacteria. He said to his knowledge, there are no problems with bac- teria reported in the Port Perry - water supply, but the depart- ment does receive complaints Book now before your summer break. ) ~ DOWNTOWN PORT PERRY B.I.A. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 12, 1989 -- 3 Water leaves a bad taste from time to time about the hy- drogen sulfide (rotten eggs) taste and smell. Chlorine is added to the supply at the source, and the of- ficial saidthe fact the resident lives at the end of a water line could have a bearing on why the chlorine level was below stan- dard on Friday. "The longer chlorine stays in water, the less strength it has," said the official. He said the Region will con- tinue to monitor closely, includ- ing further tests for chlorine levels and bacteria.
