4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 12, 1989 $192,000 available, says Durham M.P. Farm day care program The federal government is pro- viding $192,064. over the next three years to help establish a uni- que day care program for farm families in the western Durham - area, Ross Stevenson, M.P. for Durham, announced Sept. 9. In a presentation at the Ux- bridge Fair Mr. Stevenson com- mended the Bethesda-Reach Women's Institute for 'their outstanding initiative in devising this pilot project to answer the special needs of farm families. A 1987 study by the Institute showed that, due to financial con- straints and a shortage of farm labour, many wives are actively involved with their husbands in day-to-day farming operations. Because of the hours worked and the seasonal nature of farming, these families require quality child care help in their homes at variable times and hours. Without such assistance, families must take their young children out to work with them or leave them unattended, raising concerns about their safety. The Institute's Durham West On-Farm Child Care Program will provide affordable and flexi- ble child care to 20 farm families in 1989, with a 20 per cent increase in the'number of families served Fire at offices Files, shelving and a photo- copier were destroyed in a fire at the Central Seven building Sunday night. According to Durham Region- al Police the owners of the build- ing were at Central Seven and could smell a strongodor. When firefighters and police arrived on the scene, the smoke in the building was thick and visibility was almost nil, said Staff Sgt. Henry Raetsen. The fire was found on the south wall of the building. Damage is estimated 'at $5,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation. BIBLES, CHRISTIAN BOOKS and GIFTS for all ages. As well, it will assess child care needs of farm families in the area and develop programs for emergency care, for infants and school-age children, and a registry of care givers.
