Crea ada PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 26, 1989 -- 25 With 6-3 win over the Merchants, 5-2 loss to Axemen MoJacks now 2-1 in pre-season schedule After two straight exhibi- tion victories, the Port Perry ModJacks went down to defeat Saturday night in Pickering at the hands of the Ajax Axemen. In their first two wins by the same score of 6-3 over Ux- bridge and Little Britain, the ModJacks didn't have much trou- ble getting the old puck in the net. But it was a different story against the Axemen as the team missed numerous good chances around the net and wound up on the shortend of a 5-2 score. Ajax led 2-1 after the first period, added another in the second and two more in the final period. Steve Connors, in his first pre-season action, scored for Port Perry un-assisted in the first, and the lone goal in the fi- nal period came from Todd Tay- lor with the assist to Bill Law- renson. Glen McLean notched a pair of goals for the Axemen. These two teams hooked up in the opening round of last year's playoffs and didn't like each other very much. The ill feeling was evident in Saturday's game which was clogged with minor penalties and a couple of fights. The Axemen took 50 min- utes in minor penalties, two game misconducts for fighting, one ten minute misconduct and a major for checking from be- hind. The ModJacks were clipped for 32 minutes in minors, had two players tossed for fighting, and one ten minute misconduct. Port Perry will end its pre- season schedule with a return match against the Axemen this coming Sunday (Oct. 1) at the Scugog Arena. The ModJacks earned their second straight pre-season vic- tory last Thursday at the Scu- gog Arena with a 6-3 win over the Little Britain Merchants. All the damage on the scoreboard was done in the sec- ond period as the MoJacks popped in five of their six goals. Unlike the first pre-season match Sept. 17 against Ux- bridge, which was scrambly and dis-jointed much of the time, the game with the Merchants featured some good skating and some nice passing plays. An example was the first goal notched late in period one by Mike Sorely after some clev- er passing from line mates Rob Luke and Jim Vernon. John Lally's marker early in the second also resulted after a nifty passing effort. It was Lally who started the play with a perfect pass to the goal- mouth, and he finished it by Team Galley Gators Port Auto Glass Stingrays Square Boy Pizza Seagrave Steel Buildings Port Perry Merchants Country Lane Realty A. The line of Luke, Vernon and Sorely made it 3-0 in the second with Luke getting the goal on a shot to the short side. The Merchants found a bit of scoring punch mid-way through the period with two goals by Kevin Bagshaw and Tyler Teel, who snapped a shot over the glove of MoJacks goalie Warren Wright to makeit 3-2. But the MoJacks used the power play to their own advan- tage as Sorely netted his second of the game and Andrew Steele clicked on a back-hand to the short side. The final MoJack goal in the game came with seconds to play in the middle frame as vet- eran Len Giacalone cut around the defense and snapped a shot justunder the cross bar. Giacalone is starting his fourth and last season as a Mo- Jack. He was skating well Thursday night. He's an all- round kind of player who can pop some goals from in front of the net and dig the puck out the corner. And he's not shy about dropping the gloves, if chal- lenged. The MoJacks should be counting him this season for his experience, leadership and toughness. The final goal of the game came in the third on a Merchant power play with Bagshaw pull- ing the trigger from 15 feet out. Newcomer Warren Wright played the first half of the game in net for the MoJacks, with Brad Bricknell handling the second half. They were not especially busy in the net, though Brick- nell had to be quick with the trapper on a couple of occasions. The MoJacks dressed five defensemen for this one, vete- rans Chris Arsenault, Chris Ed- munson and Bill Lawrenson, along with Port Perry native Andrew Steele and newcome Paul Wilkins. oC They played a very steady game along the line. Steele was moving the puck well out of his own zone and Wilkins appears to be the kind of guy who likes to knock opposition down. In the first two games, head coach Ken Harman still had not put together the line of Brad Menzies, Warren Geer and John Harman In fact, Geer and Harman did not suit up for the Little Britain game and Menzies was teamed with Steve Durham and Kevin Desrosiers. Veteran defenseman Steve Connors sat out with a sore knee, as did Phil McBride who has a hand injury. The MoJacks have two pre- season games left before Ken Harman has to start making some tough decisions for the line-up. If last Thursday night's game is any indication, there are a lot of players who appear hungry to grab a spot on the ros- ter. This Thursday evening (Sept. 28) the team will travel to Toronto for an exhibition match against Seneca College, and pre-season play ends Sunday - Oct. 1 when the Ajax Axemen pay a visit to the Scugog Arena for a 7:20 faceof. First regular season game is set for October 8 at the Scn- gog Arena when last year's league champion Lakefield Chiefs pay a visit. The Central Junior C Hock- ey League has been re-vamped this year. forwards Lindsay "and Wellington have gone Junior B, while Ma- doc and Trenton are in an East- ern Cloop. That leaves just seven teams in the Central League: Port Perry, Uxbridge, Little Britain, Ajax, Bowmanville, Co- bourg and Lakefield who will play each other six times, three at home and three on the road. MoJack executives and coaching staff are very happy with this league format as it will cut down on the long road trips to places lake Madoc and Wellington, and it should help to develop some intense rival- ries that will spur interest and hopefully bring more fans out to the games. Six of the seven teams will make the playoffs at the end of the regular schedule, with the first place club having the choice of opening round oppo- nents from the teams that fin- ish 4,6,6.
