rN --_ ------------- A A pS TE Politicians band together to fight new Provincial tax Politicians from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are band- ing together to fight the provin- cially proposed commercial con- centration tax. If Bill 46 -- an act to establish a commercial concentration tax -- is imposed, any commercial properties over 200,000 square feet in Durham, York, Halton, Peel and Metropolitan Toronto would be taxed $1 per square foot. Although Scugog Township Mayor, Howard Hall, doubts the tax would affect any Port Perry businesses, he is pre- pared to join other regional pol- iticians in the GTA to fight the tax. Star will be closed for Thanksgiving holiday Monday, October 9 is Thanksgiving. To observe this traditional holiday, the Port Perry Star business office will be closed on Thanksgiving Monday. The Star will be published on Wednesday of next week, a day later than usual. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers a very enjoyable holi- day weekend. ! And please, if you are on the roads this weekend, slow down a bit, take it easy, and get where you're going safely. Shelia NIE TY Property owned by a munici- pality would not be exempt from the tax, Mayor Hall said. Mu- . nicipal buildings and parking lots would be taxed. "The province is getting into municipal taxation" and that's not right, Mayor Hall told the Port Perry Star. Since it appears that the tax will only apply within the GTA boundaries, Mayor Hall said it would prompt businesses to lo- cate outside of the GTA. "It's bound to make a differ- ence," Mayor Hall said. "Busi- nesses will locate beyond the GTAboundaries." Mayor Hall said Regional Chairman Gary Herrema will give an oral presentation to council at an upcoming meeting to explain the bill. Regional council will then, in all probability, pass a resolu- tion opposing that method of taxation, the mayor said. A meeting between all may- ors and regional chairman in the GTA is being organized by the City of North York , to fight the tax. Local MPP Sam Cureatz told the Star, he believes the tax has received second reading and therefore has not been debated. "Taxing municipal lots prob- ably wasn't the intent of the bill," Mr. Cureatz said. Debate on the bill is sched- uled to start soon, he said.
