Tennis 89: A look back by Heather McCrae The days are getting cooler, our flowers and tomatoes have been touched by a hint of frost, the geese are flying in their familiar V-formation readying themselves for their long flight south. It's that time of year again - fall - when tennis players, once again, are booking courts indoors for their winter enjoyment. The Port Perry Tennis Club has had another successful year. The executive was installed in February. May was a busy month for the club. Monday Night League commenced, the Wednes- day morning league started, lessons were in full swing under the leadership of our pro, Doug Coombes, the Kawartha Tennis League had resumed again and the first fun tournament was held over the long weekend. The annual Mixed Doubles Tournament was played over the Dominion Day weekend. Beth Charles and Jay Neill were the winners of this tournament. Bob McCrae and Sandra Adamcryck won the consolation side. The club's second fun tournament - Wimpleton - was held over the "British Days" weekend. Jeff Murray was the overall winner in the Men's Division while in the Ladies' Division, Winnie Tobin emerged the winner. Diane Burt organized and ran the Junior Summer Tennis Pro- gram along with the assistance of Alex Pilepic and Jay Neill. The Junior Tennis Tournament was held in mid-August. Adam Johnston won the the Men's Divi- sion and Jeremy Luke won the consolation. In the Ladies' Divi- sion Quinn Sutherland won the. Ladies' Trophy and Sam Vander- wyst won the consolation round. The Men's and Ladies' Doubles Tennis Tournament was played also in August. In the Men's and Ladies' Doubles Tennis Tourna- ment was played also in August. In the Ladies' Divi- sion Sophia Brendon and Heather Muir won the championship. In the Ladies' Consolation round Kathy Reese and Tasha Vander- wyst emerged the victors. The Wednesday morning ladies league held their own Singles Tournament in September. Kathy Reese won the championship while Heather McCrae claimed the consolation. Also, in September, the Men's and Ladies' Singles Tournament was held. Because of the wet, cold weather the semi-finals and finals were put off for a week. In the Ladies' Championship Winnie Tobin claimed the victory over her opponent Sophia Bren- don. In the Consolation round Gillian Henry won over Sally Martin. Congratulations is ex- tended to John Rickey, a new member to the club, who won the Championship over Kenny Elliott. On the consolation side, George Bright claimed the title over Jeff Murray. Because of their positive thinking and encouragement from all the members many of our juniors are now in the Tennis Team for Port Perry High School! The wind-up event is still to come, the Tennis Ball, on October 28, then the windscreens come down the next day. That's when reality hits us and we know the outdoor tennis has come to a close. The tennis club executive ap- preciates the dedication and work of everyone involved in making 1989 another successful year. On Thursday the Port Perry Pee Wee B's travelled to Brooklin for an exhibition game against the Brooklin/Whitby Minor A Team. Oshawa came out strong scoring the first 3 goals. Port showed their spirit and determination coming back to tie it up by the end of the 2nd period. Playing short handed Daryl Bourgeois and Matt Hobbs skated and checked hard. With hard work and effort Matt passed the puck to Daryl who quickly fired it in. Ricky Olaisen scored Port's 2nd goal.
