JA EE CC Ci So - PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 3, 1989 -- 39 3 pitch in Greenbank On The Environment i Ci sta i Continuing last weeks' discussion of composting, once you have a location or container for compost, how do you ~ manage the pile? Additionally, why compost autumn leaves if Durham is ready to deal with them if they cannot be burned? The Region has promised that a collection bin will be in- stalled at the Scugog Transfer station. But that is simply let- ting someone else do the work of composting - with your tax dollars. Performing your own composting can be rewarding in several fashions, you save the bother of putting the leaves into municipally issued bags and carting them to the Scugog Transfer Station, and you get the benefit of having a source of natural fertilizer for your garden, with a minimum of work. Once your compost is underway, it is important to avoid allowing the pile to become too large, and suffocating the mi- crobes trying to break down the material. The ideal size is be- tween three and five cubic feet for a hot, fast compost. Any- thing smaller will lack enough insulation to hold the heat of microbial activity. Winter composting can be promoted by adding a blanket of leaves, hay or straw to insulate the pile. Apartment composting is possible through the use ofa sealed, mobile bin. Placed on the balcony during the warm months and indoors when cold, the bin is filled with a mois- tened peat moss bedding, soil and earthworms. As kitchen waste is spread throughout the mixture, the worms consume it and convert it into a high-quality soil for houseplants or gener- al use. Every 3-6 months the worms should be divided and moved to fresh bedding - or one could take them fishing. Although the ideal ratio of carbon to nitrogen for backyard composting can be achieved with a mix of two part grass clip- pings to one part leaves, one must exercise caution if the trees or lawn has received a treatment with pesticides, fungicides or weed-killer that season. These chemicals are poisons which should not be added to your garden, because they will eventu- ally end up in your vegetables and then in you. There is currently a great deal of debate about what quan- tities of these chemicals are present in commercially grown foods and this has convinced many people to begin requesting "organic foods", which are supposed to be grown without chemicals - problem is, those poisons remain in the soil for " several years after regular application is stopped. Therefore, - 'backyard gardens are becoming a popular alternative, and ,home composting is the surest way to know exactly what ma- "terials are going into the fertilizer placed on that garden.
