Smith gave this message to about 200 County Milk Committee executive members from across Ontario attending the Board's an- Milk board news nual policy development meeting near Orillia October 10. "This panel decision is just one part of the complex and on-going international trade situation," Smith said. "It is likely that any resulting change will be delayed until after the current GATT round con- cludes at the end of next year," he said. "This is the approach the U.S. is taking on a similar GATT panel ruling on its sugar import quotas." Smith said the ruling is unfair in light of the high level of protec- tion for the American dairy market. "The U.S., is not the "great free trader" - it only allows three per- cent of its dairy market to be fill- ed by imports," Smith said. The same figure for Canada is about seven percent. "Talk about the pot calling the kettle black," Smith said. He told the delegates that the OMMB, along with other industry members, will continue to work closely with the federal and pro- vincial governments to ensure that the essential features of Canada's supply management system are preserved for the mutual benefit of consumers and milk producers.
