Tam ts RG a ------ Cd" IT. E 12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 31, 1989 Wiebke Shulz (left) of West Germany Is staying with Port Perry High School student Sarah Morris for three months as part of a student exchange program. meet n Sarah Morris liked what she saw. That's why the Grade 11 stu- dent at Port Perry High School inquired to her teachers about a German exchange program. Another student at PPHS had been involved in a student exchange and according to Sa- rah "the two girls looked like they were really enjoyingit." Her exchange partner is Wiebke Shulz from Krefeld, West Germany. Wiebke, too, was intrigued by #§ the exchange programs availa- ls ble. "I had a friend who spent a i year in Canada," Wiebke ex- plained. "She really enjoyed herself." After going through the ap- {propriate channels, Sarah and Wiebke were matched. Many people would think % communication between the two girls would be strained, but § Wiebke, who has studied Eng- lish for seven years, has a very good grasp on the language. Although both girls are in Grade 11, Sarah explained that "their Grade 11 is more difficult than ours." Wiebke said that wasn't all that was different between the two school systems. In West Germany, classes start at 8:15 a.m. and finish at 1:30 p.m. "We have no lunchhour, class- es are 45 minutes long, and we get two breaks 156 minutes long," Wiebke said. Students do not go to a "home- room", the national anthem is not played, and no morning an- nouncements are read, she con- tinued. As for holidays, the West Ger- man students get six weeks in the summer, one week in the autumn, 10 days in the winter and three weeks at Easter. When Sarah travels to West Germany, she will arrive dur- ing their Easter break. She said that will give her time to get more familiar with the lan- guage since she has only stud- ied German for two years. In Port Perry, Wiebke has been taking classes at school and will receive a report card just like everyone else. When Sarah leaves for West Germany on March 6, she will have worked ahead to complete her studies. She will attend classes in West Germany, but her per- formance will not affect her school grades. Besides the school system, Wiebke has noticed a few other differences in Canada. "Here, you have food that makes you more fat," she said, while rubbing her stomach. She said the driving age in West Germany is 18. Sarah and Wiebke are a perfect match "Exchange program a great way to ew people and friends" "Here, we go everywhere by car," Wiebke explained. At home students often travel by bus or by bike. On the reverse side of the coin, the drinking age in West Germany i is 16. "In Canada you need ID to get into (abar)," ade said. When the two girls are not in school, Sarah and her family have been showing Wiebke some of Canada's splendor. They have travelled to Toronto, Quebec, Monteal and Ottawa. A trip to Niagara Falls and the United States inon the agenda. Over the weekend, the two girls went on a camping excur- sion. Both Sarah and Wiebke are members of The Outer's Club at Port Perry High School and spent the weekend orien- teering through the wilderness. While in West Germany, the girls hope to include a few excu- sions into their schedules, in- cluding trips to Berlin and Par- is. Going back home may be sad for Wiebke who will have to give . up her new hobby as a Port Perry High School cheerleader. "I think the (exchange pro- gram) is a great experience to meet new friends, new people and see new places," Sarah said, commenting that it's best to do these things while you're still young. i alice A \ Windy Ridge ) APPLE Ki od / 985-0111 SCUGOG ISLAND 2 km.
