22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 31, 1989 Coach Wilbur was not amused To all the sports fans of Port Perry, have you ever heard of the word upset? For example fans, upsets would be Harold Ballard's Maple Leafs whipping the Flames, Mike Tyson getting koed by Shawn O'Sullivan, or the L.A. Lakers getting blown away by the Miami Heat at the Forum, and if you haven't heard what happen- ed at the arena for the Goreski Bantams on Monday, well it's nothing to talk about. What I'm trying to tell you isn't very important so lets talk bowl- Ing. Just kidding sports fans, what really happened wasn't all fun for the Goreski Insulation Bantam No. 1's. They came to the rink, probably thinking about horse-racing and lost to the under rated Uxbridge team, 9-1. Can you believe that sports fans? Uxbridge was first to score 6 - count'em - 6 goals in the first period! Port only took 4 minor penalties in the first but that wasn't all folks! Rick Hutchinson was the starting goalie, but had a rough evening and had to leave the game in the 2nd. Good game Rick. Bunny Larocque came on in the 2nd for the Insulators. It was in the 2nd frame, at the nine dollar and fifty cent mark when McBride buldged the twine as he flipped a 38 degree arc over the sprawling Uxbridge goaltender. Port could not prove to coach Wilbur if he really was a goaltender or not as the team only registered about 19 shots. The team decided he must have had horse shoes nailed along the crossbar, or a four-leaf clover painted on his forehead, but that' Bantam I.G.A. 4 Frank Real Estate 3 On Wednesday night it took a team effort for I1.G.A. to eek out a win over Frank Real Estate. Blair Bevridge opened the scor- ing on a pass out from the corner for I.G.A. Minutes later Mark Cosway found the mark on a soft shot from the face-off circle that fooled the goal tender, to tie the score at the end of the first period. Billy Sandiford opened the scor- ing in the second, banging in a pass across the goal mouth to put I.G.A. one up, but Frank's came back with two, with Troy Fisher scoring two one on a rebound and one from a mix-up infront of the net. With two minutes remaining Mike Williams scored on a shot from the blue line that the goalie juggled. With just over a minute remaining Mark Jansen scored from a mix-up infront of Frank's net to win the game for 1.G.A.. Canadian Tire 13 Swamp Auto 3 On Saturday morning, Swamp played minus four of their regulars and paid the price as they were on the wrong side of a blowout. Canadian Tire are star- ting to pass a little more and are beginning to look like a team to be reckond with. Chris Cooper was the big story for Canadian Tire as he scored six times and assisted on three goals to give him nine points for the day. Todd Taylor was right behind him with two goals and five assists. Canadian Tire were a poor excuse for not putting out enough effort to win. Port was a little cocky in this one as they figured they had an easy 2 points. This same thing happened to the boys in the season opener but they came away with a tie against Uxbridge. Assisting on McBride's effort was Moase as he worked tremen- dously hard in front of the net to get the puck to Jason. Port's offence was just not clicking as Uxbridge's goalie Shannon Tindall stymied, robbed, stoned, ripped-off, and frustrated the offence of Port Perry. Although Port showed signs of a hockey team in the 2nd and 3rd periods, it was not enough as Ux- bridge thumped the Port Perry "Phantoms" 9-1. To all Port fans, we are sorry we were absent from Monday night's game but the team pro- mises to show you how to play hockey from now on, as we found out you have to want to win in order to win. Coach Wilbur sure had a lot to say, but many of the words can't be published in the paper. The Bantam No. 1's have a busy schedule ahead of them as they go on the road for 3 games against two "AA" teams in Whitby and Ajax on Wednesday and Thurs- day. From there they go to Lind- say on Sunday, which should be a "douzy." May we remind you that the Goreski Insulators play every Monday night at 7:30 p.m. So come out and see some good smart hockey. HL news up by a score of four to one at the end of the first and added four more in the second. Mike Bardeleben scored on a power play for Swamp at the end of the first. Craig Leask scored twice with David Holt and Ian McClelland adding singles for Canadian Tire. Swamp were out-scored five to two in the third with Jason Coutoulakis and Mike Bardeleben scoring. Brad Budge singled for Canadian Tire in the third while they were short handed, stealing the puck at his own blueline. Emmerson Insurance 5 Causeway Esso 2 In the late game Saturday Em- merson Insurance won their first game of the season as they out fought Causeway Esso. If it hadn't been for the referee's good work this game could easily have gotten out of control as tempers flaired at times. } In his first game for Emmerson Mike Butt scored early in the first on a pass out from Kent Jamieson. There was only seconds remaining in the period when Eric Grosvenor did all the work to tie the score for Causeway. Emmerson went up by two in the second on nice goals by Daryl Alexander and Ross Stainton. 'Mike Butt with his second and Herb Hatch on a solo effort add- ed singles for Emmerson in the third. Heath Hudson scored while his team, Causcway, were play- ing short handed to close out the scoring. BANTAM HOUSE LEAUGE STANDINGS Team 1.G.A. Atoms bounce Cobourg On Tuesday night the Malmont Atoms travelled to Cobourg and came away with a clean victory. Port came off the bench dominating the game and cashing in with a goal in the first minute of play. Port's offense continued to put pressure on Cobourg's net cashing in 7 more times. Port's defense was extremely effective, keeping Port's end clear of any threat to their net. Jamie Reid proved invaluable earning his first shut-out of the season. Scoring for Port was Kevin Gray 2 goals, 2 assists, Tommy Chambers 2 goals, Darryl Moase 2 goals, Darly McEnaney 2 assists, Tim Fitzpatrick 1 goal, 1 assist, Todd Pary 1 goal. On Friday the Green Machines hosted Bowmanville. Although Port was out-sized, they were not out-classed as they came away with a respectable 5-2 loss. Port's defense kept this game in check as Bowmanville constant- ly tried their hand at scoring. Daryl Holtby and Jamie Reid made some fabulous saves bet- ween the pipes. Port earned 2 goals, one on an end to end rush and the other from a scramble infront of the net. Scoring for Port was Tommy Chambers and Jeff Clarke. Draw- ing an assist was Tim Fitzpatrick. On Sunday the boys travelled to STATIONERY Plain and Printed. Although Port was the stronger team on the ice they had to come from behind to light up the scoreboard, finally ending with a 4-4 tie. Scoring in this game was Kent Johnstone 1 goal, 1 assist, Rob Murphy 2 assists, Kevin Gray 1 goal, Jeff Clarke 1 goal, Darryl Moase 1 goal. Brad Shanley 1 assist, Brad Morton 1 assist. The following Friday Port hosted Oshawa's NHL Canadians in an exhibition. This game proved to be an ex- citing hockey game as both teams had many scoring chances. Port lit up the scoreboard first, putting one between the pipes in the first minutes of play. Second period saw Oshawa take over the lead, but Port continued to put pressure on Oshawa's net. In the last minutes of play, Port took advantage on a power play, cashing in one more time to tie the game at 3-3. Good work boys! Scoring for Port was Tommy Chambers 1 goal, 1 assist, Jeff Clarke 1 goal, Darryl Moase 1 goal, Kevin Gray 1 assist, and Daryl McEnaney 1 assist. Port's strong defense action is contributed by Jason Logan, Mike Heasman, Brad Morton and Jeff Clarke.
